No. 4/17 Swimming Earns Four Big 12 Weekly Honors to Cap Regular Season

The team earned 33 total honors throughout the year

(Tempe, AZ)  Following victories over Arizona this past weekend in its final regular season meet, No. 4/17 Sun Devil Swim and Dive earned four Big 12 weekly honors announced by the conference this afternoon.

The team has won 33 Big 12 weekly awards and has been won by 14 different Sun Devils.

Junior Jonny Kulow garners the first weekly honor of his career after going 2-of-2 in individual events and helping anchor two relays against the Wildcats to victory. In the 50 free he clocked in a fast 18.90 for the win. Then in the 100 free, he was the only swimmer to swim a sub-42 time, finishing in 41.66 for the win. In the 200 medley relay, he swam a swift 18.13 50 free time to bring home the win. In the 200 free relay, the Wyoming native swam an 18.53 50 free time to help the Sun Devils win the event.

Graduate Caroline Bentz wins her ninth Big 12 weekly honor this season, the most on the team after being named co-swimmer of the week, sharing the award with Arizona’s Paige Armstrong. Bentz won the 50 free in 22.01, and the 100 free in 48.69 helping lead the Sun Devil women to a victory over the Wildcats. In the 200 medley relay, she swam a 21.57 50 free anchor leg to a victory and swam a 21.97 50 starting leg in the 200 free relay that was second.

Freshman Lucien Vergnes gained his third Big 12 weekly honor of the year by being named Newcomer of the week. He was second in both of his individual events, clocking in a 52.63 in the 100 breaststroke and a 1:54.31 in the 200 breast. He swam a 21.11 50 back leg in the 200 medley relay that was first.
Freshman Julia Ullmann was named women’s Newcomer of the Week and winning her third Big 12 weekly award of the year. The butterfly specialist won the 100 fly in a swift 51.91, by almost two seconds. She was part of the winning 200 medley relay swimming a 22.89 50 fly leg, and swam a 22.00 50 free in the 200 free relay which placed second. She also was fourth in the 50 free clocking in a 22.74.

The team will prepare for the postseason with Big 12 Swim and Dive Championships taking place from February 25th through March 1st. The men’s team is vying to win their third straight conference championship, they have won the last two Pac-12 titles. For the women, they are attempting to win their first conference championship in team history.
