Aztecs Baseball splits ACCAC opener at Paradise Valley

(Paradise Valley, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (11-1, 1-1 in ACCAC) opened ACCAC conference play on Saturday at Paradise Valley Community College (6-5, 1-1).

Game 1: (23) Pima Aztecs 4, Paradise Valley Pumas 1

The Aztecs took the lead in the 1st inning and got some offensive firepower from sophomore Collin Senior (Horizon HS) and freshman Jackson Glueck.

Senior hit an RBI double in the 1st inning to drive in lead-off hitter Leon Cereceres. Senior followed through again with another RBI double in the 3rd inning to score sophomore Caden Richards to put the Aztecs up 2-0.

Freshman Zach Plasschaert drew a lead-off walk to open the 4th inning and Glueck followed with a two-run shot to right field that cleared the fence for the home run as Pima went up a 4-0.

Senior finished the game 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run while Glueck went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Cereceres was 2 for 4 with a run and Plasschaert went 1 for 2 with a run and two walks.

Sophomore Maclain Roberts produced a quality start as he pitched six innings, giving up one run (one earned) on two hits with six strikeouts and one walk on 89 pitches. Sophomore Tsubasa Tomii picked up the save as he pitched one inning with one walk.

Game 2: Paradise Valley Pumas 10, (23) Pima Aztecs 2 (7 innings)

The Aztecs took the lead with a run in each the 3rd and 5th innings but the Pumas scored 10 unanswered to end the game.

Freshman Ramon Martinez hit an RBI single to score freshman Ernie Alvarez (Canyon del Oro HS) to put Pima on the scoreboard. Martinez knocked in another run with his second RBI single of the game driving in sophomore Andrew Grenert (Horizon HS), who doubled two batters earlier to get in scoring position.

The Pumas scored three runs in the 6th inning and seven runs in the 7th inning to close it out.

Martinez finished 2 for 2 with two RBIs. Alvarez went 1 for 2 with a run and Grenert was 1 for 3 with a run.
Freshman Sal Valenzuela took the loss.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field on Tuesday when they host Chandler-Gilbert Community College. First game starts at noon.
