(Scottsdale, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (17-5, 9-3 in ACCAC) suffered a setback on the road in Wednesday’s matchup at Scottsdale Community College (13-7, 9-3).
The No. 9 ranked Aztecs got upset by the No. 24 Artichokes 68-62 as Pima dropped their second straight game.
The Aztecs held a 34-32 lead at halftime, but the Artichokes started out the third quarter with a 10-2 run and took a double-digit lead at 55-43 after outscoring the Aztecs 23-9 in the frame. The Aztecs were held scoreless for almost four minutes in the quarter.
The Aztecs chipped away to start the fourth quarter as they scored the first eight out of 10 points forcing the Artichokes to call timeout with the score at 57-51 with 6:44 left. Freshman Kiley Sours-Miller scored under the basket to make it a four-point deficit at 59-55 with 4:45 remaining but Scottsdale scored on back-to-back possessions to get it back to an eight-point lead at 63-55. The Aztecs cut it to four points again (66-62), but the Artichokes hit a pair of free throws to seal it.
The Aztecs led 14-10 after the first quarter and got a spark from sophomore Mattanaya Vital (Amphitheater HS) as she hit three 3-pointers as part of a 13-4 run, which gave the Aztecs their biggest lead of the game at 27-14. The Artichokes countered with a 16-2 run of their own to take the lead back at 30-29. Pima led 34-32 at halftime.
The Aztecs finished the game with 20 turnovers.
Sours-Miller finished with a team-high 14 points and posted her 10th double-double of the season by adding 17 rebounds. She also had five blocks in the game.
Sophomore Rori Hoffmeyer (Cibola HS) went 4 for 8 from the field and closed it out with 13 points. She also had six steals, five rebounds and two blocks.
Vital went 4 for 8 from three-point range and scored 12 points while freshman Kennedi Niemann contributed with 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.

The Aztecs will look to bounce back on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium when they host Phoenix College. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
