(Phoenix, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (16-3, 8-1 in ACCAC) earned its seventh straight win on Wednesday as it played at South Mountain Community College (5-14, 0-9) in Phoenix.
The No. 10 ranked Aztecs defeated the Cougars 85-44. All of Pima’s wins over the last seven games have been by double digits and an average margin of 31 points.
The Aztecs took control early as they outscored the Cougars 21-5 in the first quarter. The Cougars cut into Pima’s lead in the second quarter making it 33-22 after scoring six straight points but Pima countered by finishing the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 42-22 lead at halftime.
The Aztecs put together a 9-0 mid-way into the third quarter and helped secure the win with a 16-0 run late in the fourth quarter to take an 81-39 advantage. The Aztecs outscored South Mountain 43-22 in the second half.
Freshman Kiley Sours-Miller and sophomore Rori Hoffmeyer (Cibola HS) were big contributors on the glass as Pima finished with 73 rebounds for the game. Sours-Miller posted another double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds to go with three blocks. She snatched 11 offensive boards. Hoffmeyer closed out the game with a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds to go with four assists. She grabbed 10 defensive boards.
Freshman Kennedi Niemann finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, five steals and two assists while sophomore Amelie Buffill-Gutierrez (Sabino HS) was the fourth Pima player in double figures with 10 points. She also had five assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Freshman Melicia Nelson (Window Rock HS) added seven points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Freshman Lucy Land had six points.
The Aztecs had 25 assists on 37 field goals and 14 steals for the game.
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Saturday against Glendale Community College. Tipoff is at 2:00 p.m.
