Kota Benson scores game-high 18 points as No. 5 Men’s Basketball improves to 20-0

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (20-0, 8-0 in ACCAC) earned its 20th straight win on Saturday as the top two teams in ACCAC Division II locked up on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The No. 5 ranked Aztecs took a double-digit lead in the first half and never relinquished as they beat Chandler-Gilbert Community College 95-55.The teams went back and forth to begin the game as the score was tied on four occasions with four lead changes in the first eight minutes of play. The Aztecs struggled from the field missing their first seven of eight shots.


With the score tied at 11-11, the Aztecs went on an 8-0 run to make it 19-11 and forcing the Coyotes (12-8, 5-3) to call timeout. Chandler-Gilbert cut it to 19-14 but the Aztecs went on a 13-4 run to go up 32-18. The Aztecs went on to outscore the Coyotes 15-5 in the final 5:33 of the half to take a 47-23 at halftime.

The Aztecs continued to build their lead in the second half as they led by as much as 40 points at the end of the game. They outscored Chandler-Gilbert 48-32 in the second half.

Sophomore Kota Benson scored a game-high and season-high 18 points as he went 6 for 11 from the field and hit two 3-pointers. He also finished with four assists.

Sophomore Cohenj Gonzales (Mesquite HS) scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half as he went 8 for 15 from the field to go with three rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Freshman Mason Hunt (Bradshaw Mountain HS) provided a spark off the bench scoring 15 points. He hit a pair of three-pointers in the first half and closed out the game going 5 for 9 shooting and 3 for 3 from beyond the arc.

Sophomore Wes Ball (Marana HS) fell short of a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds. He went 3 for 3 from the field.

The Aztecs are back on the road on Wednesday when they play at South Mountain Community College. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
