(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (15-3, 7-1 in ACCAC) was back at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Saturday for an afternoon matchup with Chandler-Gilbert Community College (5-12, 1-7).
The No. 10 ranked Aztecs found themselves trailing early in the first quarter but took over in the second half to beat the Coyotes 68-50 for their sixth straight victory.
The Aztecs scored the first six points in the first quarter, but the Coyotes shocked them by going on a 15-2 run to take a 15-8 lead. The Aztecs closed the gap but trailed 15-12 heading into the second quarter.
The Aztecs trailed 18-14 but went on a 10-0 run to go up 24-18 as they clinged to a 26-25 lead at the break.
Sophomore Amelie Buffill-Gutierrez (Sabino HS), who didn’t play in the first half, jumpstarted the Aztecs in the third quarter as they went on a 10-2 run to take a 40-31 lead. She went 4 for 4 in the quarter with eight points and gave Pima their first double digit lead at 47-36 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Aztecs outscored the Coyotes 21-14 in the final quarter and never surrendered their double-digit lead.
Freshman Kiley Sours-Miller was on display as she finished with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. She grabbed five offensive and five defensive boards. She also put in work on defense as she posted seven blocks and two steals.
Bufill-Gutierrez made her first six shots and finished the game going 7 for 8 from the field with 15 points off the bench. She also added two rebounds and two assists.Freshman Lucy
Land contributed with eight points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals while sophomore Kennedi Niemann had seven points and six rebounds. Freshman Melicia Nelson (Window Rock HS) added four points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.
The Aztecs will be back on the road on Wednesday when they lay at South Mountain Community College. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
