(Tempe, AZ) Sun Devil Hockey goaltender Gibson Homer was named to the watchlist for the Mike Richter Award announced on Wednesday by the Hockey Commissioners Association. The honor is given annually to the most outstanding goaltender in Division I NCAA ice hockey during the regular season.
Homer impressed so far this season, boasting a .932 save percentage and 1.88 goals against average per game. Both rank him in the top four of Arizona State’s new conference, the NCHC, and land in the top-10 nationally.
Through his first eight starts, the junior goaltender secured a 4-3-1 record including 25.5 saves per game and his two shutouts are tied at eighth in the NCAA.
Homer started the New Year with a hot hand. In his first two starts of 2025, the ASU goaltender recorded back-to-back wins allowing just one goal to his 61 saves. Both wins came against strong competition in then-No. 16 Cornell in the Desert Hockey Classic championship game and NCHC foe, then-No. 14 North Dakota.
The Michigan native looks to continue his strong form this weekend as No. 13 Arizona State heads north to take on No. 15 St. Cloud State on Jan. 17 and 18.
Homer is one of eight NCHC goaltenders named to the watch list, the most out of any conference in college hockey.
ABOUT THE MIKE RICHTER AWARD
The Hockey Commissioners Association (HCA) has announced a “Watch List” of 35 goalies who will compete for the Mike Richter Award, given annually to the top goalie in men’s NCAA Division I hockey since 2014. The 35 goalies come from the United States (16), Canada (12), Sweden (3), Slovakia (2) and one each from Czechia and Hungary. Of the U.S. goalies, Michigan leads the way with four, followed by three from Florida and two each from Illinois and New York. There are five freshmen, 12 sophomores, 11 juniors, five seniors and two graduate students among those recognized.
NOTE: Goalies qualified by meeting minimum GAA (<2.30) and=”” save=”” percentage=”” (=””>.920) standards. Other names may be added for consideration before the first formal vote.
A committee of voters — made up of a cross section of coaches, administrators, scouts and media — will pare this list down to approximately a dozen semifinalists within the next three weeks and then ultimately choose a winner from three finalists who will be announced in April during the NCAA Frozen Four. A similar award to recognize the top female goalie in the NCAA is also presented by the HCA.
