Schroeder Posts Double-Double as Bucs beat Roals 84-64

(Fullerton, CA)  The Park University Gilbert women’s basketball team got back to what head coach Ben York calls his full sail system as they made 15 three-pointers en route to a 84-64 win over Hope International Saturday afternoon in Fullerton Calif,

The Bucs move to 2-1 in conference play and 8-5 overall. The Royas drop to 6-9 overall and 0-3 in GSAC play.

In the Bucs last two games All-America Kayla Schroeder, one of the most accurate three-point shooters in the country, struggled from beyond the arc not making a three-pointer against OUAZ or Life Pacific. She turned that around this afternoon at HIU tying her career high knocking down eight trifectas as she posted 29 points. This was her fourth 20-plus point game this season and the second highest scoring day behind her 35 points against Bethesda. Schroeder also posted the fifth double-double of her career as she added 11 rebounds to lead the team.

The Bucs exploded out of the gate outscoring the Royals 26-13 in the opening quarter. Schroeder went 4-5 from beyond the arc as she posted 12 points. The Bucs forced six turnovers in the first quarter and turned them into five points.

In the second quarter, the two teams played things evenly 18-18 as the Bucs took a 13-point advantage in the locker room at halftime. The Bucs forced five more turnovers and converted it into eight points.

The Bucs came out in the third quarter and built the lead up to as many as 22 points, before settling with a 17-point advantage at the end of the stanza. The Bucs kept the defensive pressure going with seven more turnovers converted into nine points. Savannah Huerta led the scoring with seven points.

The Bucs put the finishing touches on the game in the fourth as Schroeder scored eight of Park’s 16 points in the frame as they expanded their lead to the final margin of 20 points.

As a team, the Bucs shot 38 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three-point range as they made 15 threes. This is the Bucs ninth game this season with 12 or more three-point shots made and their fifth with 15 or more. The Bucs came into this week leading the country in three-point baskets made per game (12.9)

In addition to Schroeder’s 29 and 11, Alynna Palacios added 14 points, six boards and six more steals giving her 12 thefts over the two game California trip. Huerta finished with 11 points.

The Bucs now return home for a pair of games against Embry Riddle on Thursday, January 16 at Arizona Athletic Grounds at 5:30 p.m. and The Master’s on Saturday, January 18 at Chandler-Gilbert Community College at noon.
