(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (11-0) stepped away from ACCAC conference play on Saturday as it played the Underrated Talent Union Academy at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
The No. 7 ranked Aztecs defeated the Gorillas 134-80 for their 11th straight win to start the season. It was also their seventh game out of 11 scoring in triple figures.
The Aztecs took their first double digit lead at 35-25 after sophomore Max Majerle (Arcadia HS) converted on a three-point play. The Aztecs followed that with a 17-2 run in almost five minutes to go up 52-27. Pima led 64-37 at halftime.
The Aztecs continued to pour it on as they scored the first 15 points of the second half to go up 79-37.
Pima finished with nine players in double figures. Sophomore Cohenj Gonzales (Mesquite HS) led the way with a team-high 20 points and posted a double-double by adding 10 assists.
Majerle went 7 for 8 from the field and 3 for 4 from three-point range as he scored 18 points. He also had five steals and four assists.
The bench scored 70 points as freshman Khalon Johnson (Eduprize Charter) led with 15 points as he was 6 for 9 from the field with eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Freshman Isaac Johnson added 14 points on 6 for 7 shooting and seven rebounds while freshman Brock Mendoza also netted 14 points after going 7 for 8 from the floor. He also pulled down six rebounds.
Freshman Mason Hunt (Bradshaw Mountain HS) closed it out with 12 points and four rebounds while sophomore Kota Benson (Mesa HS), and freshmen Kaelum Brown (Casteel HS) and Aidan Schmidt (Casteel) each scored 10 points. Brown posted a double-double as he finished with 11 rebounds.
The Aztecs shot 30 for 43 (70 percent) from the field in the second half. They out-rebounded the Gorillas 62-24.
The Aztecs return to the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Monday when they host a game against a Post Grad team at 6:00 p.m.
