(MESA, AZ) The Park University Gilbert men’s basketball team (2-4, 0-0) lost 59-62 on home turf to the Northern New Mexico College Eagles (2-10, 0-0), Saturday night at Arizona Athletic Grounds.
In a tightly contested game that saw a total of seven lead changes, the Buccaneers got the short end of the stick as guard Joziah Ramos sunk the game-winning triple for the Eagles with 13 seconds remaining.
Park-Gilbert looked strong in the first half taking a five-point lead into the locker room, shooting a solid 41.4% from the field and an impressive 58.3% from beyond the arc with seven three-pointers made.
The second half of play turned into a game of runs, as both teams took turns stealing momentum from the other. The Bucs’ second half shooting numbers dipped to 34.8% from the field and 28.6% from three-point land.
A layup from senior forward Isaiah Williams put the Bucs up 59-56 with 1:50 remaining, when Ramos scored a pair of threes to give Northern New Mexico the road victory in the game’s final moments.
Sophomore guard Tanner Pate, who played 35 minutes, led Park-Gilbert in the scoring column with 19 points.
Senior forward Aidan Moreno posted an efficient 13-point, 4-rebound outing as he shot 5-6 from the field and made the two three-pointers attempted.
The Park-Gilbert men’s basketball team returns to the floor Friday, Nov. 29 at 1:00 p.m. MST, when they travel to Salt Lake City, Utah for a back-to-back against the Westminster University Griffins (3-2, 0-0).
