(Huntsville, AL) The Pima Community College men’s soccer team played in its NJCAA Division II National Semifinals game on Thursday against Northeast Community College at Joe Davis Stadium.
The No. 1 seeded Aztecs played in their third straight overtime game but fell to the No. 5 seeded Northeast Community College in the penalty kick session. The score was tied at 2-2 and the Aztecs lost in PKs 5-3.
The Aztecs hit their first three penalty kicks but missed the fourth attempt. The Hawks (20-1-3) converted on all five of their attempts.
The Aztecs struck first as sophomore Jacob Lund-Iversen scored in the 25th minute off a rebounded shot in the box.
Sophomore Ismael Ruiz (Tucson Magnet HS) recovered a shot that was blocked by Northeast goalkeeper Mathias Kristoffersen and drove it into the goal in the 30th minute. The Aztecs led 2-0 at halftime.
The Hawks got on the scoreboard in the 57th minute when they converted on a penalty kick by Edouard Nys. They tied the game at 2-2 after Marius Elmose’s goal with 9:13 left in regulation.
The Aztecs had four shots between the two overtime sessions and finished with 16 total for the game. Sophomore Jose Carlos Ortiz (Barca Academy) closed out the match with four saves.
The Aztecs close out the 2024 season with a 20-1-1 overall record. It was the most wins in a season since 2018 when they went 26-2. Their 15-1 record in ACCAC conference play was the most wins since 2018 when they were 18-2. They produced a 13-game winning streak during the season and were 10-0 at the West Campus Aztec Field this season. The Aztecs were Co-ACCAC Conference Champions with Phoenix College and claimed their first Region I, Division II title since the 2020-21 season.
