Kota Benson and Wes Ball’s double-doubles spark #8 Men’s Basketball over Wenatchee Valley College

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (4-0) scored over 100 points for the fourth straight game as it played Wenatchee Valley College (1-1) in the second day of the Aztec Fall Classic.

The No. 8 ranked Aztecs led from start to finish as they beat the Knights 109-78 at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

With the score tied at 12-12, the Aztecs got a boost from sophomore Kota Benson (Mesa HS) as he converted on a three-point play. Freshman Mason Hunt (Bradshaw Mountain HS) followed by hitting a three-pointer and getting fouled as he converted on a four-point play for a quick 7-0 run. The Aztecs outscored the Knights 18-7 to take their first double digit lead at 30-19 halfway through the first half. Pima took a 48-33 lead into the locker room.

Up 58-41 with four minutes gone by in the second half, the Aztecs went on a 14-3 run as Hunt, freshman Kaelum Brown (Casteel HS), and freshman Khalon Johnson (Eduprize Charter), who all came off the bench, scored the points during that stretch to put the score at 72-44.

The Aztecs got to 100 points when freshman Isaac Johnson scored in the paint to make it 100-67 with 3:29 left in the game. The Aztecs led by as much as 35 points at 107-72.

Sophomore Gabe Oldham scored a team-high 20 points to go with seven rebounds.

Sophomore Wes Ball (Marana HS) finished with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Benson fell short of a triple-double as he posted 11 points (all in the first half), 10 assists and eight rebounds.

Sophomore Max Majerle (Arcadia HS) finished the game with 15 points, five assists and three rebounds while Hunt had 11 points and six rebounds. Khalon Johnson was the sixth Pima player to score in double figures as he had 10 points.

Brown scored nine points and Isaac Johnson posted eight points and five rebounds.

The Aztecs will close out play in the Aztec Fall Classic on Saturday when they host Big Bend Community College. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
