(Thatcher, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (2-0) put on a display of balanced scoring and got a boost from its bench on Friday against Trinidad State College in the second day of the Eastern Arizona Classic.
The No. 8 ranked Aztecs defeated Trinidad State College 92-63.
The Aztecs took a 24-17 lead after the first quarter and took command by outscoring the Trojans 26-8 in the second quarter to take a 50-25 lead at the break. The Aztecs led by as much as 32 points in the early minutes of the third quarter.
Freshman Kiley Sours-Miller scored a team-high 14 points as she went 7 for 8 from the field and added six rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
Freshman Kennedi Niemann flirted with a double-double as she finished with 11 points and seven assists. She also had two rebounds and two steals.
Sophomore Rori Hoffmeyer (Cibola HS) added 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one block.
The Aztecs drained nine 3-pointers for the game and were led by sophomore Mattanaya Vital (Amphitheater HS), who went 3 for 6 from beyond the arc and finished with nine points off the bench.
The Pima bench scored 44 points and were led by freshman Gabriella Sanchez (Tucson Magnet HS), who had 12 points on 6 for 9 shooting and three rebounds in nine minutes of play. Sophomore Tayden Hanks added eight points and three rebounds and sophomore Amelie Buffill-Gutierrez (Sabino HS) had seven points.
The Aztecs close out play in the Eastern Arizona Classic on Saturday when they go up against Utah State University-Eastern. Tipoff is set for 10:30 a.m.
