Sun Devil Men Ahead after Day 1 against California and Stanford at Tri-Meet

(Tempe, AZ)  The No.6 Sun Devil men’s team lead both No. 1 California and No. 9 Stanford halfway through this weekend’s tri-meet. The No. 18 Sun Devil women remain competitive with No. 4 Stanford and No. 9 California heading into Saturday.


Day 2 of the meet commences tomorrow at 11 a.m. and can be followed on Meet Mobile.

Jonny Kulow anchored both the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay both which the Sun Devils won. He swam an 18.35 50 free leg, and a 41.08 100 free leg. Kulow also placed second in the 100 free, swimming a 41.89.

Ilya Kharun shined in the 200 fly, winning the race in 1:39.60, and was part of both winning relay teams swimming a 19.12 50 fly leg in the 200 medley, and a 42.35 50 free starting leg.

Caroline Bentz highlighted the women’s side. Bentz anchored the 200 medley relay, and placed 2nd in the 100 back (52.99) and was 3rd in the 100 free. (49.18). Alexa Reyna came in 2nd in the 1000 free (9:40.78) and Iza Adame placed third in the 100 breast (1:00.20).

Diving Results:

  • In the women’s 1m diving competition, Kayden Hayes led the way for the Sun Devils with 239.60 points.
  • For the men’s 1m diving, Jackson Stallworth placed 5th with a score of 261.75.
  • In the women’s 3m diving competition, Kayden Hayes posted the best score with 250.00 points, placing 6th respectively.
  • In the men’s 3m diving event, Jackson Stallworth placed 2nd in the competition, scoring 327.35.


Event-by-Event Breakdown:

200 Medley Relay

The Sun Devils women’s team began the event taking third with a relay team consisting of Miriam Sheehan, Iza Adame, Julia Ullmann, and Caroline Bentz with a time of 1:36.83. 

The ASU men followed taking first in this event with a quartet of Lucien Vergnes, Andy Dobrzanski, Ilya Kharun, and Jonny Kulow with a 1:21.83 time. 

1000 Free

Alexa Reyna was second for the women’s team in this event with a 9:40.78 time. Daniel Matheson finished second with a time of 8:49.26 and Reece Grady came in third coming in at 8:55.49 for the men’s team. 

200 Free

ASU women didn’t place top-three in this event, but Charli Brown took fifth with a 1:46.54 time. The men’s team placed second and third with Patrick Sammon coming in at 1:33.30 and Tiago Behar finishing 1:33.77. In heat two, Quin Seider took first with a 1:34.83 time. 

100 Back

The women’s team came in second and third in this event, Bentz finishing with a 52.99 time and Sheehan at 53.30. In heat two, Hana Edwards finished third coming in at 54.92. 

Lucien Vergnes took first for the men’s squad with a 45.32 time. In the second heat, Jono Adam also finished first coming in at 46.96 and Quinlan Gould placed third with a 47.38 time. 

200 Fly

The Sun Devil women didn’t place in this event. In heat two, Vivian Wilson took third finishing at 2:05.68. 

Ilya Kharun won this event for the ASU men with a 1:39.60 time and Filip Senc-Samardzic placed third at 1:42.91. In heat two, Jake Mason finished first coming in at 1:45.09. 

100 Breast

Iza Adame took first in this event for the women with a 1:00.20 time. In heat two, Zoe Summar placed third at 1:01.76. 

The men finished first and second with Dobrzanski taking first at 51.92 and Vergnes second coming in at 52.29. 

100 Free

Bentz placed third in this event for the women with a 49.18 finish. Second heat, Ullmann took first with a 49.46 time and Erin Milligan came in third at 49.91. Third heat, Indigo Armon finished third again with a 50.94 time. 

Taking second and third for the men was Kulow at 41.89 and Sammon at 42.00. In heat two, Palmer finished on-top with a 42.52 time and Seider third at 43.16. 

400 IM

Brown came in fourth for Sun Devil women with a 4:11.27 finish. 

Placing first for the men’s team was Micheal Hochwalt with a time of 3:45.33. Behind him was Cale Martterat 3:47.19. Reynolds finished third in the second heat with a 3:54.71 time. 

400 Free Relay

The women placed third with the relay team of Elli Straume, Ullmann, Milligan, and Brown with a 3:17.29 time. They also took third in the second heat with a 3:26.12 finish with Haiden Schessel, Kaelia Hughes, Brooke Larweth, and Catherine Vaughan

The men placed first in this event at 2:46.68 with a squad consisting of Kharun, Sammon, Senc-Samardzic, and Kulow. In heat two, ASU took second with Leo Verschooten, Christopher Harig, Tolu Young, and Christian Osterndorf coming in at 2:56.74.
