(Mesa, AZ) The Park University Gilbert women’s soccer team (4-10-3, 3-7-3) stunned the Benedictine University Mesa Redhawks (3-12-1, 1-11-1) with a three-goal comeback for the 3-2 win, Thursday evening on home turf.
The Buccaneers honored 12 seniors and their families tonight, sending them off victorious in their final match at Arizona Athletic Grounds.
BENU took about 15 minutes to get on the scoreboard, with a goal from Redhawks forward Rod Brylee assisted by defender Maya Shearon. The Bucs only fired off four shots in the first half, two of which were on goal. In the 62nd minute, the Redhawks got their second goal of the night off a score from defender Alexis Abbott.
Buccaneers freshman defender Bekah Sipinga and senior forward Emma Alvarez led the late offensive charge, as Park-Gilbert stared down a 2-0 deficit with roughly six minutes to play.
Sipinga got the Bucs on the board in the 84th minute, then Alvarez netted the equalizer in the 86th minute. Sipinga then put the Buccaneers on top with her second goal of the night in the 88th minute, solidifying the win for Park-Gilbert in this Halloween thriller.
The Bucs’ offense took 11 shots on the day, paired with seven corner kicks on offense. The Redhawks totaled five shots on the evening.
The Buccaneers women’s soccer team, winners of two in a row, return to the pitch for one final regular season bout when they host Arizona Christian University (6-9-2, 4-7-2) at Desert Sky Park in Gilbert, Ariz., this Saturday, Nov. 2nd, at 5:30 p.m. MST.
