(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College men’s soccer team (17-1) is heading back to the Region I, Division II Championship round as it took care of business at the West Campus Aztec Field.
The No. 2 seeded Aztecs defeated No. 3 Glendale Community College for their 10th straight victory. The Aztecs beat the Gauchos (10-5-2) in all three matchups this year. Pima finished 10-0 at Aztec Field this season.
The Aztecs did their damage early as sophomore Jose Luis Martin Montealegre scored from the right side of the goalpost after a cross-pass from freshman Eythan Mancilla (Sunnyside HS) in the 9th minute.
The Aztecs tacked on to their lead a little over a minute later when sophomore D’Andre Pickett (Tucson Magnet HS) launched a shot into the box and fellow sophomore Missael Montilla (Tucson Magnet HS) headed the ball into the goal for the score in the 10th minute.
“I acted off of instinct and when I saw the ball go up in the air, I just decided to go for it,” Montilla said. “It was last minute, I didn’t think about it too much.
“Our coach (David Cosgrove) talked to us about it setting the tone early. Those goals set the tone for the rest of the game and Glendale was chasing.”
The Aztecs finished with six shots on goal while the Gauchos had four in the game. Sophomore Jose Carlos Ortiz (Barca Academy) closed it out with four saves.
Pima also secured their 10th shutout victory of the season.
“I saw a whole bunch of people who wanted to get the win. Going up two goals early, it’s a tough task to do because 2-0 is the most dangerous score in soccer so we knew we had to dig deep, and it started with everybody.” Pickett said.
The Aztecs will play at No. 1 seed Phoenix College on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in the Region I, Division II Finals.
“Another nationally ranked game and everybody will be watching. We’ll go back to the drawing board. Hope we do the same thing we did here last Saturday (3-1 win for Pima on Oct. 26). We know it’s not going to be easy but we’re ready for the dog fight.”
