No. 6 Sun Devil Men Outpace No. 5 Wolfpack; Deniz Ertan and Bentz Shine for Sun Devil Women

(Raleigh, NC)  The No. 6 Sun Devil men were victorious Saturday morning over the No. 5 Wolfpack men, 195-158 in Raleigh for their second dual meet victory of the year. 

The Sun Devil women battled with the No. 12 Wolfpack all morning, featuring Deniz Ertan and Caroline Bentz earning victories in the 400 IM, 200 back and the 1000 free Saturday morning.

Ilya Kharun broke his own school record in the 100 fly with record time of 43.95, beating out his previous record set last season by three-tenths of a second and setting the fastest time in the country. The bronze medalist would also earn wins in the 400 medley relay with a 43.99 100-fly leg and a 18.59 50-free leg in the 200-free relay.

Caroline Bentz shined by setting her second individual record of the weekend. This time in the 200 back with a time of 1:53.11, which is a season best. The graduate also was the anchor leg in the 400 medley relay with an anchor lef of 48.56, and a time of 22.05 in the first leg of the 200 free relay.

Deniz Ertan won both of her races today, finishing on top in the 400 IM with a time of 4:10.83, and winning the 1000 free with a winning time of 9:37.96. She won three out of four events this past weekend.

Andy Dobrzanski won the 200 breast in 1:54.14, helping extend the ASU lead and was part of the group that swept the breaststroke event. Emma Gehlert won the 200 breast with a time of 2:10.66 as Zoe Summarplaced third. 

Diving Results:

Kayden Hayes was the top Sun Devil in the 1m diving event with a score of 241.65, just missing out on a third place finish by 0.60 points.

Lane Stallworth came out on top for the second time this weekend with a score of 301.20 in the 1m diving competition. He was the only Sun Devil to eclipse 300+ points.


Event-by-Event Breakdown:

400 Medley Relay

The ASU women took second and third in the medley relay, the relay team of Sheehan-Adame-Ullmann-Bentz finished with a time of 3:33.56, while the third place team of Ella GuilfoilEmma GehlertHannah HurlemanErin Milligan finished in 3:39.77


For the men, the quartet of Lucien VergnesAndy Dobrzanski-Kharun-Kulow finished in first in 3:02.04 to secure 11 points for the men’s team. ASU’s B-team also finished in third with a time of 3:06.77.

400 IM

Deniz Ertan came from behind to win the 400IM in 4:10.83 and Charli Brown placed 3rd with a time of 4:13.24. Sonia Vaishnani placed 4th in 4:15.80, respectively to secure points for ASU.

For the men, the Sun Devils placed second, third and fourth in the event. Michael Hochwalt finished in 3:46.57, Cale Martter was third in 3:46.90 and Daniel Matheson was fourth in 3:48.89.

200 Back

Caroline Bentz set her second individual record of the weekend with a time of 1:53.11 finishing third in the race. Jordan Greber was 4th in 1:56.11.

Jack Wadsworth was the top Sun Devil finishing in 1:43.31.

100 Fly

Freshman Julia Ullmann finished second in the race with a 52.82, Miriam Sheehan was fourth finishing 53.91.

Ilya Kharun broke his own school record finishing 43.95 to win the event. Filip Senc-Samardzic was third with a time of 45.50.

200 Breast

Emma Gehlert won by edging out NC State with a time of 2:10.66, finishing ahead by a tenth of a second. Zoe Summar was third with a time of 2:11.55.

The Sun Devils swept the event to pick up important points over the Wolfpack. Andy Dobrzanski won the race in 1:54.14, followed by freshman Lucien Vergnes finishing in 1:54.31 and Oscar Bilbao placing third in 1:56.09.

100 Free

Elli Straume placed third in the 100 free with a sub-50 time of 49.88, respectively.

Patrick Sammon and Jonny Kulow placed first and second with Sammon winning the race in 41.80, and Kulow being second with a time of 41.96.

1000 Free

Deniz Ertan won her second race of the day with a time of 9:37.96, and her teammate Alexa Reyna placed second finishing 9:41.43.

Reece Grady was the top Sun Devil placing 3rd in 8:56.00 and Daniel Matheson came in 4th with a time of 8:57.33

200 Free Relay

The ASU women placed second with the relay team of Bentz-Sheehan-Milligan-Straume with a time of 1:29.43, just missing the school record by less than a tenth of a second. 

For the men, Kharun stormed out to the early lead and never looked back with a 18.59 50 free split as Kulow closed out the win with a 18.52 split to finish with a winning time of 1:14.64, securing the dual victory.
