Tolu Young named Big 12 Men’s Newcomer of the Week

(Tempe, AZ)  Freshman Tolu Young has been named the Big 12 Men’s Newcomer of the Week as announced by the conference on Wednesday.

Young, appeared in three races in this past weekend’s quad-meet featuring Arizona, Northern Arizona and Grand Canyon. He placed 2nd in the 50 free with a time of 19.89, being one of two ASU swimmers to finish in less than 20 seconds alongside teammate Tommy Palmer. This is Young’s first career Big 12 honor.

The Fiji native placed 3rd in the 50 fly, setting a personal best of 21.48 and was part of the winning 200 free relay (1:16.79), by swimming a 19.64 50 free leg. The Sun Devil men went 2-0 this past weekend, defeating Arizona 202-79, and GCU, 230-51.

The Paris Olympian becomes the 4th Sun Devil this season to earn a Big 12 honor, joining Caroline Bentz, Ilya Kharun and Tommy Palmer this 2024-25 campaign. 

The maroon & gold have a week off to prepare for their first road trip out East to Raleigh, N.C. to face-off against N.C State, who has the No. 5 ranked men’s team in the country and the No. 11 ranked women’s team on Oct. 25-26th and can be seen on ACC Network Extra starting at 2:30 p.m. AZT (5:30 p.m. EST).
