Sun Devil Swim & Dive Sweeps the First All-Arizona Quad-Meet

The women go 3-0 on the day and the men go 2-0 Saturday

(Tempe, AZ)  Sun Devil Swim and Dive hosted its first quad-meet in program history, hosting the three other Division-I swim programs, Arizona, Grand Canyon and Northern Arizona’s women’s team Saturday Afternoon at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

The team won 22 out of 31 events to help Arizona State win the first in-state quad meet between all Division I Arizona schools. The Sun Devils will meet the Wildcats again on Feb. 8 to compete for two territorial cup points.

The maroon & gold will have a week off to prepare for their first road trip out East to Raleigh, N.C. to face off against N.C State, who has the No. 5 ranked men’s team in the country and the No. 11 ranked women’s team on Oct. 25-26th and will be shown on ACC Network Extra.

Diving Results:

On the women’s 1-meter diving, the top Sun Devils were freshman Mayari Coriano, scoring 236.55 and Kayden Hayes scoring 231.90. Lane Stallworth was the top men’s diver in the event placing second, scoring 316.25.


EVENT-BY-EVENT BREAKDOWN:

400 Yard Medley Relay

The Sun Devil women’s team kicked off the meet by taking the top two spots in the first heat with times of 3:34.09, with a quartet of Miriam Sheehan, Iza Adame, Julia Ullmann and Caroline Bentz, and the 2nd place ASU relay team of Charli Brown, Zoe Summar, Hannah Hurleman and Indigo Armon with a time of 3:39.03. ASU finished in first in the second heat.

The Sun Devil men’s team also took first place in the event with a time of 3:05.89 which consisted of a squad of Ilya Kharun, Andy Dobrzanski, Filip Senc-Samardzic and Quin Seider. The 2nd place relay squad of Jack Wadsworth, Lucien Vergnes, Tommy Palmer and Jonny Kulow finished 2nd in 3:08.62.

600 Yard Freestyle

Alexa Reyna took the top spot for the women’s team with a 5:43.08 time. Deniz Ertan placed second with a time of 5:45.84. Lia Csulak also won the second heat with a time of 6:00.60.

On the men’s side, Michael Hochwalt and Ryan King took the top two spots with times of 5:23.96 and 5:26.66 respectively. Reece Grady and Dylan Gravely finished in first and second in the second heat with times of 5:22.73 and 5:25.26.

150 Yard Freestyle

For the Sun Devil women, Elli Straume took first place with a time of 1:18.73 and Julia Ulmann took second with a 1:19.45 time. Arizona took the second heat and Vivian Wilson finished in second with a 1:21.28 time. The Wildcats also won the third heat and Emma Gatzke took third place with a time of 1:21.91.

For the men’s squad, Patrick Sammon and Jonny Kulow took the top two spots with times of 1:07.24 and 1:07.75. ASU again placed first and second in the second heat as Tiago Behar and Quin Seider finished with times of 1:08.92 and 1:10.20.

300 Yard IM

Sonia Vaishnani and Charli Brown took first and second for the women’s squad with times of 3:05.24 and 3:08.83. Ella Guilfoil finished in first place in the second heat with a time of 3:09.44.

For the Sun Devil men, Cale Martter and Parker Reynolds took second and third with times of 2:54.38 and 2.56.09. Dylan Gravely and Finn Kemp took the top two spots in the second heat with times of 2:54.17 and 2:57.86.

50 Yard Back

Sheehan won the backstroke with the top time of 24.29.Caroline Bentz finished in second with a time of 24.90. In the second heat, Payden Rafferty and Jordan Gerber finished in first and second with times of 25.84 and 25.86.

Lucien Vergnes and Jack Wadsworth took the top two spots with times of 21.75 and 21.98. Jono Adam and Quinlan Gould also took the top two spots in the second heat with times of 22.20 and 22.26.

50 Yard Breast

Iza Adame and Ginger McMahon tied for second place with a time of 28.37. Zoe Summar finished in second place in the second heat with a time of 28.86, which was the fifth fastest time of the day.

Andy Dobrzanki and Oscar Bilbao finished in second and third with times of 24.29 and 25.30. 

150 Yard Fly:

For the Sun Devil women, Deniz Ertan, Grace Lindberg and Vivian Wilson had a 1-2-3 finish with times of 1:25.84, 1:28.53 and 1:29.27. GCU took the second heat.

Ilya Kharun and Filip Senc-Samardzic took first and second with times of 1:12.29 and 1:15.46. Jake Masonwon the second heat with a time of 1:17.54 and Ryan King finished in third with a 1:22.42 time.

50 Yard Freestyle

Indigo Armon and Elli Straume finished in first and third with times of 23.17 and 23.28. GCU won the second heat.

Tommy Palmer, Tolu Young and Leo Verschooten swept for the Sun Devil men with times of 19.83, 19.89 and 20.31. Christian Osterndorf and Leo Roden took first and third in the second heat with times of 20.02 and 20.59.

150 Yard Backstroke

Caroline Bentz finished in first with a time of 1:22.78 and Ella Guilfoil came in second with a 1:26.48 time. In the second heat, Hana Edwards came in third with a time of 1:29.13. 

Jack Wadsworth and Quinlan Gould came in first and second with times of 1:15.10 and 1:15.15. Jono Adam won the second heat with a time of 1:14.64.

150 Yard Breaststroke

For the women’s team, Zoe Summar and Emma Gehlert finished in the top two positions with times of 1:36.22 and 1:36.48. Iza Adame won the second heat with a 1:36.62 time. In the third heat, Kaelia Hughesand Ariel Beltran finished in first and second with times of 1:41.02 and 1:42.43.

For the men’s team, Lucien Vergnes came in first with a 1:24.07 time and Andy Dobrzanski took second with a 1:24.77 time.

300 Yard Freestyle

On the Sun Devil women’s team, Charli Brown won the first heat with a time of 2:46.74 and Sonia Vaishnanicame in third with a 2:50.45 time. Alexa Reyna and Deniz Ertan tied for first in the second heat with a 2:46.40 time. Katherine Randall and Lia Csulak took first and second in the third heat with times of 2:53.68 and 2:56.24.

On the men’s squad, ASU swept the first heat. Patrick Sammon, Tiago Behar and Jake Mason took first, second and third place with times of 2:30.12, 2:33.30 and 2:34.96. Reece Grady and Parker Reynolds took first and third place in the second heat with times of 2:35.95 and 2:37.83.

50 Yard Butterfly

Julia Ulmann and Miriam Sheehan took first and second in the first heat with times of 24.18 and 24.29. Hannah Hurleman finished in first place in the second heat with a 24.89 time.

Ilya Kharun and Jonny Kulow took the top two spots in the first heat with times of 19.94 and 21.47. Tolu Young and Tommy Palmer took first and second as well in the second heat with times of 21.48 and 21.62. The third heat saw Leo Verschooten and Jackson Stallworth go 1-2 with times of 21.44 and 22.18.

100 Yard IM:

Charli Brown and Jordan Gerber took the top two positions with times of 54.89 and 56.41. In the third heat, Emma Gehlert and Kinley Wigle finished in first and third with times of 57.44 and 59.33.

Ilya Kharun took first place with a 46.91 time and Filip Senc-Samardzic took second with a 48.50 time. ASU took first and second again in the second heat courtesy of Lucien Vergnes and Brady Johnson. They finished with times of 47.99 and 50.40 respectively.

200 Yard Free Relay:

In the first women’s relay, Arizona State took first and third place with times of 1:29.36 and 1:33.90. The Sun Devils were able to edge out the Lopes for first place in the second women’s relay with a time of 1:33.41.

In the first men’s relay, ASU placed in the top spot with a time of 1:16.79. To end the meet, the Sun Devils came in third place in the second men’s relay with a time of 1:21.85.
