Buccaneers Defeat Redhawks 2-1

(Mesa, AZ)  The Park University Gilbert women’s soccer team (2-7-2, 1-4-2) defeated the Benedictine University Mesa Redhawks (2-8-0, 0-7-0) Thursday evening on the road at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.


The Buccaneers secured their first conference win of the regular season by a score of 2-1 through consistent offensive pressure.

Wasting no time getting on the scoreboard, Bucs senior forward Dani Mares netted the opening goal 19 seconds into the match.

BENU quickly responded with a goal from freshman forward Julia Bodelaasse in the fourth minute to tie the match. Bodelasse’s score ended up being the Redhawks’ only shot recorded in the first half.

Right before the halftime break, Bucs sophomore midfielder Leigha Ritchie found the back of the net in the 39thminute off an assist from junior forward Lauren Runnion.

The Bucs offense totaled 23 shots, 13 in the first half of play. 13 of those total shots on goal.

Freshman Goalkeeper Journey Morimoto wins her first collegiate start and season debut, recording a save on the night.

Buccaneers women’s soccer returns to play at 5:30 p.m. MST this Saturday, Oct. 12, when they take on the No. 23 ranked OUAZ Spirit (5-4-1, 3-3-0) at Desert Sky Park in Gilbert, Arizona.
