Sun Devils Sweep UNLV in Season Opener Friday Night

(Tempe, AZ)  In the season opener, Sun Devil Men’s and Women’s Swim and Dive swept UNLV at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center to usher in a new era of ASU Swimming under head coach Herbie Behm. Final results can be found here.

The Sun Devils won 28 events in the team’s first sweep of the 2024-25 season, including breaking a five-year-old school record in the women’s 200-yard medley relay. Ilya Kharun won three individual events on the night to kick-off the 2024-25 season.

NOTABLES:

In the first race of the season, Mirham Sheehan, Iza Adame, Julia Ulmann and Caroline Bentz set the school record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:37.05, breaking the 2019 record set in 2019 of 1:37.26.

Two-time bronze medalist Ilya Kharun won three individual races, the 100 fly, 200 fly and the 200 IM, Including being a part of the winning 200-yard medley relay team Friday evening.

Charli Brown was victorious in the 200y IM (1:59.25) and the 200y free (1:46.58).

Making her Sun Devil debut, grad transfer Caroline Bentz won the 200y backstroke (1:55.29) and was part of two winning relay teams. (200-yard medley relay and the 400 free relay).

Also in her ASU debut, Miriam Sheehan was part of the record-breaking relay. She won the 100 backstroke (55.67) by one-hundredth of a second over Bentz.

In her debut, freshman Julia Ulmann won the 100y fly (52.77) and was part of the 200y medley relay.

In his freshman debut, Frenchman Lucien Vergnes won the 200y breast (1:55.67) and placed third in the 100y breast (52.93).

Diving Results:

In the diving portion, UNLV placed first on the women’s 1m diving, but Vera Brewer led the way placing second with 244.20 points, then Amayah Wiley with 241.35 points, in fourth was Kayden Hayes with 232.20 points.

On the men’s side, Jackson Stallworth led the men on 1m diving, finishing third with 284.93 points.

On the women’s 3m diving competition, Kayden Hayes led the Sun Devils by placing first with a score of 238.73, Vera Brewer took fourth with 235.28 points.

For men’s 3m diving, Jackson Stallworth finished fourth with 252.30 points. Leading ASU.

EVENT-BY-EVENT BREAKDOWN:
200 Yard Medley Relay

The Sun Devil women’s team opened the event with a sweep going 1-2-3. The relay of Sheehan-Adame-Ulmann-Bentz won the race with a new school record with a 1:37.05 time. Second was Brown-Summar-Hurleman-Armon and the relay of Guilfoil-McMahon-Vaishnani-Brinker took third. 

The men’s team also swept this event with the first-place squad of Wadsworth-Dobrzanski-Kharun-Kulow coming in at 1:23.54. The Sun Devils took second with Vergnes-Young-Senc-Samardzic-Palmer and Adam-Kemp-Verschooten-Osterbdorf placing third. 

1,000 Yard Freestyle

On the women’s side, Alexa Reyna took first with a 9:48.95, Lia Csulak took third for ASU. The men’s team swept this event going 1-2-3 Reece Grady took first coming in at 9:06.64, Dylan Gravely second at 9:07.75, and Ryan King third with a 9:13.04 time. 

200 Yard Freestyle

ASU women took first and second in this event, Charli Brown won with a time of 1:46.58 and Elli Straumebehind her at 1:48.40. The men swept as Patrick Sammon won with a time of 1:33.70. Tiago Behar placed second at 1:35.37 and Filip Senc-Samardzic third in 1:36.03.

100 Yard Backstroke

The Sun Devil women controlled the podium in this event with Miriam Sheeham in first with a time of 52.67. Caroline Bentz was second at 52.68 and behind her was Ella Gulifoil at 54.00. In the second heat, Emma Gatzke came in first in front of Ariel Beltran with a 56.83 time. 

The ASU men took first and third, Jack Wadsworth came in first at 46.79 and Quinlan Gould took third with a 47.71 time. 

100 Yard Breaststroke

The women’s team swept this event, Iza Adame came in first with a 1:00.76 time. Emma Gehlert was second and Zoe Summar finished third. UNLV won the event for the men’s team, but ASU took second and third with Andy Dobrzanski in second with a 52.57 and Lucien Vergnes with a 52.93 time. 

200 Yard Butterfly:

The Sun Devil women took the top two spots. Sonia Vaishnmai took first with a 1:57.70 time and Grace Lindberg came in at 2:01.13. 

The men swept this event with Ilya Kharun in first with a 1:39.47 time. Jake Mason came in second in 1:45.70 time and Michael Hochwalt at 1:46.35. 

50 Yard Freestyle:

Indigo Armon came in first for the women’s side at 22.96. Mary Brinker followed her with a 23.11 time and third was Bridget Sullivan at 23.41 for an ASU sweep. 

The men also swept with Johnny Kulow on top with a 19.3 time. Tommy Palmer followed at 19.59 and Tolu Young placed third in 19.84. 

100 Yard Freestyle

The women took the top two spots in this event, the winner being Elli Straume in 49.92 and behind was Indigo Armon at 50.63. 

On the men’s side, Patrick Sammon finished first with a 42.31 time. Behind him was Johnny Kulow at 42.33 and third was Tiago Behar in 43.65. 

200 Yard Backstroke

ASU women went 1-2-3, the winner was grad transfer Caroline Bentz in 1:55.29. Second was Jordan Gerber with a 1:57.74 time and following third was Charli Brown in 1:58.49. The men finished top two, the winner was Quinlan Gould in 1:45.00 and behind him Jack Wadsworth at 1:46.34. 

200 Yard Breaststroke

The Sun Devils swept this event for both the men’s and women’s. Emma Gehlert came in first with a 2:11.80, Zoe Summar at 2:13.44 for second, and third was Iza Adame in 2:15.04. For the men, the winner was Lucien Vergnes at 1:55.67, to follow was Andy Dobrzanski at 1:56.54, and finishing third was Cale Martter with a 1:58.78 time. 

500 Yard Freestyle

ASU women took the top three in this event, coming in first was Deniz Ertan at 4:45.09. To follow in was Alexa Reyna at 4:50.34 and third was Grace Lindberg with a 4:51.26. 

The men’s team also swept. Finishing first was Daniel Matheson at 4:26.38. Second was Reece Grady in 4:27.63 and third was Jake Mason in 4:27.78. 

100 Yard Butterfly

Women’s team swept this event, in first place was freshman Julia Ulmann with a 52.77 time. To follow was Miriam Sheehan at 53.36 and third was Hannah Hurleman at 54.88. The men also swept and to finish on-top was Ilya Kharum in 44.57. To follow up was Filip Senc-Samardzic at 46.40 and third was Tommy Palmerat 46.57. 

200 Yard IM:

The Sun Devils took top three spots with Charli Brown to lead with a 1:59.25 time. Behind her was Sonia Vaishnani in 2:00.83 and third was Zoe Summar in 2:01.13.  

The men’s team took first and third, Ilya Kharun won with a 1:44.57 time. To close out the top three was Cale Martter at 1:49.36. 

200 Yard Free Relay:

The Sun Devil women took one and two in this event, the winning relay team was Bentz-Straume-Guilfoil-Milligan with a 3:18.87 time. Second was relay of Ulmann-McMahon-Sheehan-Armon with a 3:20.97 finish. 

The men’s team swept this event, the relay team who finished on-top was Palmer-Sammon-Kulow-Gould with a 2:51.68 time. In second place was relay of Senc-Samardzic-Behar-Seider-Osterndorf and third was Young-Verschooten-Roden-Matheson to close out the dual. 

UP NEXT

The Sun Devils will return to the pool next Saturday hosting an all-Arizona quad-meet featuring Arizona, NAU and GCU on Oct. 12. The meet is set to begin at 12 p.m. AZT.
