Aztecs Volleyball dominates tiebreaker to beat Phoenix College

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College volleyball team (9-6, 6-2 in ACCAC) got back in the win column on Friday as it hosted Phoenix College (1-10, 0-8) at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The No. 22 ranked Aztecs held off the Bears and dominated the fifth set tiebreaker winning 25-18, 20-25, 25-11, 23-25, 15-3.

The Aztecs scored seven straight points early in the first set to go up 10-3 and held their biggest lead at 21-11. The Bears scored four straight, but Pima closed it out to take a 1-0 lead.

The Aztecs were forced to rally for much of the second set as they found themselves trailing 10-4. They scored four straight points to cut it to a two-point deficit at 10-8. Down 21-13, the Aztecs scored four straight points again and got as close as three points at 22-19 but the Bears scored three of the final four points to tie the match at 1-1.

Pima dominated the third set as they led from the start and took a double-digit lead with seven straight points to make it 24-10. Sophomore Haylee Gilleland (Flagstaff HS) had three kills, sophomore Tameryn Koford had two blocks and freshman Addy Fisher (Queen Creek HS) had back-to-back aces during that stretch. Pima took a 2-1 lead in the match.

Pima led by as much as six points on multiple occasions in the fourth set and were ahead 22-17 after a kill by freshman Julia Baird. The Bears rallied off seven straight points to take a 24-22 advantage. The Aztecs got the next point, but the Bears forced a tiebreaker set with the following point.

The Aztecs left no doubt in the tiebreaker as they scored the first 12 points of the set. Freshman Maggie McReynolds (Mountain View HS) had three aces during that stretch. Pima scored the final three points to secure the match.

McReynolds finished with 15 kills and four aces while Gilleland posted 17 kills, two blocks and two aces. Sophomore Kenna Simon closed out the match with seven kills and one block.

The Aztecs will take a break from ACCAC Division II conference play as they head to Thatcher for the Eastern Arizona College Invitational on Saturday. They will play Arizona Western College at 11:00 a.m. and host Eastern Arizona at 2:00 p.m.
