Aztecs Volleyball has five-match winning streak snapped at Glendale CC

(Glendale, AZ)  The Pima Community College volleyball team (8-6, 5-2 in ACCAC) faced a tough test on the road at Glendale Community College (9-3, 5-2) on Wednesday in an ACCAC conference matchup between two NJCAA Division II nationally ranked programs.

The No. 22 ranked Aztecs fell in straight sets to the No. 23 ranked Gauchos 25-13, 29-27, 25-20 as Pima’s five-match winning streak was snapped.

The Aztecs trailed 16-13 in the first set and surrendered nine straight points as Glendaleas they fell behind 1-0 in the match.

The second set featured 12 ties and five lead changes. The Aztecs held set point at 24-21 but the Gauchos rallied with three straight points to tie it at 24-24. The Aztecs held set point on two more occasions but could not close it out. The Gauchos scored the final two points of extra play to take a 2-0 lead.

The Aztecs took the lead in the third set after getting the first three points of the set; two were off of aces from freshman Addy Fisher (Queen Creek HS). Sophomore Jasmin Joseph (Tanque Verde HS) had an ace to put Pima up 7-4, which forced Glendale to use a timeout. Glendale came back to tie it and the Aztecs took one more lead in the match at 11-10. The Gauchos scored three straight from there and never relinquished the lead.

Sophomore Haylee Gilleland (Flagstaff HS) finished with 12 kills, one ace and one block.

That was Pima’s second loss to the Gauchos this season as they fell in four sets when the teams met at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Aug. 27.

The Aztecs will be back at Aztec Gymnasium on Friday when they host Phoenix College in an ACCAC match. First volley is set for 7:00 p.m.
