Bucs Drop Conference Opener at #22 Ottawa University-Arizona

(Surprise, AZ)  The Park University Gilbert women’s soccer team (1-4-0) lost 2-0 to the Ottawa University of Arizona (3-1-1) Tuesday night, dropping their first in-conference match as members of the Great Southwest Athletic Conference on the road at Spirit Field.

The No. 22 ranked program in the NAIA found the back of the net in the 28th minute off a goal from forward Lexy Rowe assisted by forward Harlee Kuntz. The Spirit then followed that up with a match-sealing goal in the 83rd minute from midfielder Karissa Frerichs, with forward Melinda Lertzman assisting on the play to lead 2-0.

The Buccaneers offense peppered OUAZ goalkeeper Chloe Avila through the first 45 minutes of play, with 6 shots and 3 shots on goal. They took three more shots in the second half of play, but none of these scoring chances converted into goals. The three shots on goal came from forward Emma Alvarez (4:23), defender Ashlynn Jones (13:28), and midfielder Abigail Dalebout (20:29).

OUAZ’s offense took 12 shots, six of which were on goal. Bucs goalkeeper Morgan Trail, recorded three of her four total saves in the second half. In what turned out to be a physical match, OUAZ recorded seven fouls while Park-Gilbert racked up 11 on the evening.

The Bucs look to quickly bounce back in another GSAC match-up with Arizona Christian University (2-2-0) Thursday, Sept. 19 at 5:30 p.m. MST in Glendale, Ariz.
