Sunday Sweep for #16 Volleyball Over St. John’s

(San Diego, CA)  The perfect start to the season continues for No. 16 Sun Devil Volleyball as the team swept St. John’s (25-20, 25-7, 26-24) on Sunday afternoon at Jenny Craig Pavilion to win the Jack Talmadge Volleyball Classic.

Three Sun Devils earned all-tournament honors. Graduate libero Mary Shroll was named the MVP after totaling 58 digs and six aces over the weekend. She had double-digit digs in each win, including a season high of 24 against San Diego. Graduates Claire Jeter and Shania Cromartie were named to the all-tournament team. Jeter hit a blistering .566 over the three matches and had 30 kills and a team-best 13 blocks. This is her second all-tournament honor of the season. Cromartie led the team in kills with 37, earning double figures in each win. She also had 30 digs.


Notable Stats

Arizona State (6-0) ended the tournament undefeated and kept the winning streak alive after beating St. John’s (4-2).

Graduate Claire Jeter, a middle blocker, hit a blistering .733, a new career high and tied for the fourth-best in ASU history in the rally-scoring era. She had 11 kills on 15 attempts with no errors. She also had three blocks and an ace. She is now tied for fifth in career total blocks at ASU with 362.

The other game leader in kills was graduate outside hitter Shania Cromartie, also earning 11. She hit .450 (a season best) and had seven digs.

Graduate libero Mary Shroll held down the defense again with a team-high 13 digs. She has reached double figures in every match this season. She also had three aces, matching her season best.

At setter, graduate Argentina Ung had 36 assists, seven digs, four kills and three blocks.

Junior pin hitter Bailey Miller had eight kills on a .467 clip, which is a new season best for her.

Set One: ASU 25, St. John’s 20

To start the match, the Sun Devils created some distance with a quick 3-0 run to make it 9-6, capped off by a kill from Geli Cyr. With kills from Bailey Miller and Cromartie, Arizona State scored four in a row to push the lead to 16-9. The Red Storm responded, going on a 7-1 run to get within one, down 19-18. However, a 5-1 run for the Sun Devils got them to set point, 24-19, and a kill from Jeter won it at 25-20.

Set Two: ASU 25, St. John’s 7

The second set was all Sun Devils. They got an early 5-1 lead with help from three kills from Jeter. A massive 7-0 run with Brynn Covell serving put Arizona State up 16-5. With three ASU aces in a 9-1 run, Arizona State closed out the set to win 25-7.

Set Three: ASU 26, St. John’s 24

The Sun Devils kept the momentum in the third set to start, cruising to an 8-1 advantage behind two kills and a block from Cromartie. The Red Storm chipped away at the lead, going on a 7-1 run to make it a one-point game, 12-11. With two kills from Kjolhede and another from Cromartie, ASU pushed the lead back up to 15-11. It was back and forth for a bit until St. John’s scored four-straight points to take the lead at 23-22. The Sun Devils battled back a set point for the Red Storm and scored three in a row with two kills and a block from Jeter to win 26-24.

Up Next

The last road trip of the non-conference slate is next weekend at Nebraska where ASU will face Wichita State, Nebraska and Long Beach State.
