Wildcats on a Roll

(Tucson, AZ) – Troy Hutchison

Coming into Friday night’s game Arizona has won their last four games, putting Arizona at (4-1)to start the season.

Friday night’s opponent featured a Boise State team coming off three straight wins with a record of (4-1) headed into Friday’s match up.

While Arizona started off the season with a 1-0 loss to Albany, the Wildcats haven’t looked back since with not only four straight wins, but also four straight shutouts.

The game started off evenly matched, with both Arizona and Boise state getting into scoring threats early in the game. Most of the first half was back and forth with some scoring opportunities for Arizona. In the seventeenth minute with two shots on goal they couldn’t find the back of the net.

Eventually, Arizona was able to break through in the thirty month minute with a pin point cross from Jill Aguilera to Brooke Wilson who headed in for Arizona’s first goal of the game, and Wilson’s third goal of the season.

Wilson was quick to point out how great of a cross Aguilera made to set her up for the goalsaying, “Jill played a perfect ball, it was to the tee”. After that goal, Arizona started to take control of the half out shooting the Broncos ten to two in the first half.

The second half was a different story for the Broncos, who never seemed to get a rhythm going on offense in the second half. Arizona’s defense really buckled down, not giving Boise state many opportunities to score. One standout on defense was Sabrina Enciso who stopped some Boise state attacks with key slide tackles and stops.

Enciso had this to say about Arizona’s performance on defense, “Defensively, I think we are very connected, on and off the field”.Arizona held Boise state to just five shots, and only three shots on goal.

Still, the scoring was not over for the Wildcats. In the seventy ninth minute walk on Taryn Siegele scored a header from a cross pass by Hallie Pearson, giving the Wildcats the 2-0 lead late into the game.

With Siegele’s unlikely goal she said, “It was really exciting, there are no words to describe it.” This was the juniors first ever career goal.

The Wildcats next opponent is Sunday versus the Baylor Bears, an elite eight team last season with a record of (5-2).

Coach Amato had this to say about Sunday’s match up, “We are going to have to deal with how hard they work and play”. Arizona will take on Baylor Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Tucson time.
