(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College volleyball team (1-4, 0-1 in ACCAC) played its first home match of the 2024 season on Tuesday as it hosted Glendale Community College at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
The Aztecs won the first set but fell to the Gauchos in four sets (20-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-16).
The Aztecs matched their biggest lead of the set at 17-11 but the Gauchos rallied off five straight points to make it a one-point game at 17-16. The Aztecs countered by scoring four straight points of their own to build it to a 21-16 advantage. Sophomore Elli Meinke (Ironwood Ridge HS) had a block at the net that sealed the first set victory.
The Aztecs fell behind early in the second set at 8-1 but scored 10 of the next 12 points to take their first lead of the game at 11-10. The Gauchos put down the next four points to reclaim the lead for good. Down 24-20, the Aztecs made it interesting with three straight points forcing the Gauchos to call timeout. Glendale won the next point to tie up the match at 1-1.The score was tied at 10-10 in the third set, but the Gauchos rallied off 13 of the next 17 points to take the lead at 23-14 as they took the lead at 2-1.
The Aztecs scored the first four points in the fourth set, but the Gauchos tied it at 6-6 as part of scoring five straight points to take the lead for good. Pima cut the deficit to one point at 12-11 but couldn’t tie or overtake the lead. The Aztecs were outscored 13-5 for the reminder of the set.
The Aztecs will play at Phoenix College on Wednesday. First volleyball is at 7:00 p.m.
