Mendez and Garate score first half goals, Valencia has 10 saves as Women’s Soccer hangs on to beat Scottsdale CC

(Scottsdale, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s soccer team (1-0, 1-0 in ACCAC) opened the 2024 season on Sunday and picked up a tight win at Scottsdale Community College (0-1-1, 0-1-1).

The Aztecs struck first and broke up a tie game in the first half to beat the Artichokes 2-1.

Freshman Marissa Garate (Tucson Magnet HS) scored the eventual game-winning goal off a corner kick in the 35th minute with an assist from freshman Kristal Navarro (Tucson Magnet HS).

Freshman Samantha Mendez (Tucson Magnet HS) put the Aztecs on the scoreboard with a free kick shot from 30 yards out in the 16th minute.

Elizabeth Wheeler tied the game 18 seconds later for the Artichokes.

The Aztecs managed four shots on goal for the game. Freshman Brooke Valencia (Sabino HS) finished the game with 10 saves.

The Aztecs will play at Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.
