Three Selected to National Teams for the Paris Olympics

Tiago Behar will represent Switzerland, Max McCusker to represent Ireland and Tolu Young to swim for Fiji at the Olympics.

(Tempe, AZ)  Three members of Sun Devil Swim and Dive have been chosen to compete in the Paris Olympics, Tiago Behar to represent Switzerland, alumni Max McCusker to represent Ireland and incoming freshman Tolu Young to represent Fiji later this month. All three are participating in their first Olympic games.

Behar, is one of eight swimmers that will represent Switzerland and he will compete in the 4x200m freestyle relay. Earlier this year he competed in the Long Course Swiss Championships where he swam a 1:50.64 in the leadoff portion of the 4X200m free relay and placed second in the 200m freestyle prelims with a time of 1:50.49.

This past season with the Sun Devils, Behar won the Elite 90 award for the highest cumulative grade-point average for Men’s Swim and Dive out of participating teams at NCAA Championships. In addition, he competed in every meet for the Sun Devils being a key contributor in helping the Sun Devils repeat as conference champions en route to their first NCAA title.

Max McCusker qualified for the Ireland national team, competing in the 100m fly after placing 1st in the Irish Olympic Trials on May 22-26th earlier this year with a winning time of 51.97 which is also a personal best for the alum. 

McCusker competed as a Sun Devil in the 2022-23 season as a fifth-year after spending four seasons at Florida State. In his time as a Sun Devil he helped ASU place second at the NCAA Championships being part of the 200y medley relay team that claimed second place.

McCusker swam a time of 51.90 at the 2024 Irish Olympic Trials, setting the national record in the 100 fly.  

At the 2023 Pac-12 Championships, he was part of the 200y and 400y-medley relay teams that won a conference title that helped ASU win their first Pac-12 championship. In 2022, McCusker won the Irish National Championship in the 50m free, 50m fly,  100m free and 100m fly.

Young, a 2024-25 commit to the program will represent Fiji in Paris by taking part in the 50m freestyle, his personal best is a 22.87 in the 50m free at the 2023 World Aquatic Championships. He has won multiple state championships in Washington.

The three swimmers join Ilya Kharun in Paris to represent the Sun Devils.

The 2024 Paris Olympics are set to take place from July 26–August 11th with coverage being seen on NBC, USA Network and Peacock. Swimming at the Olympics starts on July 27th and goes through August 4th.
