(Indianapolis, IN) Every four years the country’s best swimmers compete against one another in an attempt to qualify for Team USA, arguably the hardest Olympic team to make.
On Saturday, the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials started where 22 Sun Devil Swimmers of present and the past are representing ASU vying for a spot on Team USA and a trip to the Paris Olympics at Lucas Oil Stadium, the first Olympic Swim Trials to take place inside a football stadium.
Recaps and results from each day can be seen below highlighting the Sun Devil athletes who competed over the nine-day stretch.
Day 1 (June 15, 2024)
Daniel Matheson highlighted the opening day of trials by being able to qualify for the final after coming in fifth place in the final heat of the 400m freestyle with a time of 3:48.57.
That evening, the Peoria, Arizona native swam a 3:48.63 to place 7th, respectively.
Sun Devil Alumna Lindsay Looney took part in the 100m butterfly and won her heat with a time of 59.25, however was unable to move onto the semi-finals, placing 24th out of 76 swimmers. Looney has the 200m fly and the 200m freestyle remaining in the Olympic Trials this upcoming week.
Andy Dobrzanski swam in the first of two events in the 100m breaststroke and finished with a time of 1:01.12, placing 23rd out of 87 swimmers. His next events will be in the 200m breaststroke slated for Tuesday.
Julian Hill and Jake Mason took part in the 400m freestyle, where Hill placed 28th with a time of 3:53.48 and Mason swam a 3:58.31 to place 52nd.
ABOUT THE OLYMPIC TRIALS
NBCU will present nine consecutive nights of swimming in primetime on NBC and Peacock from Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, in what will be the first time ever that this event will be staged on a football field, in front of hundreds of thousands of fans over nine days. This year’s Trials will also be the 100th anniversary since Indianapolis hosted the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials for the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris.
