(Mesa, AZ) The Park University Gilbert softball team split a double header this afternoon with La Sierra at Mesa Community College in Mesa, Ariz. The Eagles won the first game 5-1, while the Bucs took game two 2-0. The Buccaneers win the series 3-1 having won both games against the Eagles yesterday.

Game 1 – La Sierra 5, Park Gilbert 1

A three-run first inning and two-run second gave La Sierra all the run support they would need for starting pitcher Danielle Pfenning who picked up her third win of the season throwing 5.0 innings and allowing six hits and one run. Shelbie Debenedetti picked up her first save of the season with two innings of scoreless relief.

Nicole Darby (0-4) took the loss for the Buccaneers as she surrendered five runs (4 earned) in 1.1 innings. Christian Smith finished the game for Park, throwing 5.2 innings allowing only two hits the rest of the way striking out three.

At the plate Noelle Gumm continued her impressive freshman campaign with two hits (2-3). Elisa Garcia drove home the only Buccaneer run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning.

Game 2 – Park Gilbert 2, La Sierra 0

Behind a masterclass pitching performance from the reigning Cal Pac pitcher of the week, Abril Nerey, Park Gilbert won the series with the eagle with a 2-0 win in game 2.

Nerey (4-9) who was named Cal Pac Pitcher of the week today for her outstanding performance in the circle yesterday, continued her dominance over the Eagles with another complete game performance. This time she only needed seven innings and shut out LSU, allowing only two hits and striking out three. For the weekend, Nerey finished with 16 consecutive scoreless innings and allowed only four hits in those 16 innings striking out 10.

The Bucs got on the board in the third inning, as Ledezma Romero drove home Taylor Mountwho had walked, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Romero hit the ball so sharply into the right field the outfielder was able to throw the speedy centerfielder out on the play to take away a hit, but not the RBI as Mount scored easily.

The Bucs second run came in the sixth to give Nerey some insurance, as Gumm drilled a double to right center with one out. Alejandra Castro then crushed a ball off the wall in left to bring Gumm home. Nerey also helped her cause with two hits on the day.
