(Phoenix, AZ) The Pima Community College softball team (13-8, 2-2 in ACCAC) got back to ACCAC conference play on Tuesday in a road matchup at South Mountain Community College (4-5, 2-4).
Sophomore Alexis Tsosie-Hood and freshman Jazmyne Waddell (San Manuel HS) made their impacts on both sides of the field. Freshman Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) finished the day 4 for 8 with three RBIs, a run scored and three doubles.
Game 1: Pima Aztecs 11, South Mountain Cougars
W – Tsosie-Hood. 2B: Waddell 2, Martin. HR: Tsosie-Hood 2, Asher, Chacon. SB: Salazar.
After trailing in the 1stinning, the Aztecs rallied off six runs to take the lead for good. Tsosie-Hood helped her cause on both sides of the diamond pitching a complete-game and hitting two home runs.
Tsosie-Hood put the Aztecs on the board with a three-run blast to center field scoring sophomore Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) and Waddell. Martin hit an RBI single in the inning to plate freshman Mari Asher (Canyon del Oro HS) to make it 4-1.
Sophomore Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) drove a shot to left field in the 3rd inning to score fellow sophomore Camilla Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) as Pima went up 6-1.
Tsosie-Hood was not finished at the plate as she hit her second home run of the game on a three-run drive to center field bringing around Chacon and Waddell.
Asher hit Pima’s fourth homer of the game as she went yard on a two-run shot in the 7thinning scoring freshman Cheyanne Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS).
Tsosie-Hood closed out the game, going 2 for 3 with six RBIs and two runs scored while Chacon and Asher each finished with two RBIs and two runs. Waddell was 2 for 4 with two runs and Zepeda finished 2 for 5 with a run. Martin went 1 for 4 with an RBI and a double.
Tsosie-Hood pitched all seven innings, giving up six runs (six earned) on 12 hits with three strikeouts and three walks
Game 2: Pima Aztecs 3, South Mountain Cougars 1
Waddell shut down South Mountain’s offense as she pitched a complete-game, giving up one run (none earned) on one hit with four strikeouts and one walk on 106 pitches.
The Aztecs overcame seven errors and did enough on the offensive side. Martin hit a lead-off double in the 1st inning and later scored after Zylinski-Wrobel reached on an error.
The Aztecs tacked on two more in the 4th inning when Martin hit a two-run RBI double with two outs to score freshman Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo HS) and Asher, who hit back-to-back singles to get on base.
Martin finished the game 3 for 4 with two RBIs, a run and two doubles while Noriega went 2 for 3 with a run and Asher was 1 for 3 with a run.
The Aztecs get back on the road next Tuesday, Mar. 12 when they play an ACCAC conference doubleheader at Glendale Community College. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
