(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College softball team (9-8, 0-2 in ACCAC) hosted its home and ACCAC conference opener on Saturday against No. 14 ranked Phoenix College 11-4, 4-0) at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field.
The Aztecs found themselves in a shootout in the first game and couldn’t hold the lead in the second game. Sophomore Kayla Miranda (Tucson Magnet Hs) finished the day 4 for 6 with three home runs, six RBIs and four runs scored. Fellow sophomore Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) was 4 for 9 with three RBIs and three runs scored and sophomore Camilla Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) closed out her day going 5 for 8 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Freshman Jazmyne Waddell (San Manuel HS) and sophomore Alexis Tsosie-Hood took the losses on the mound.
(14) Phoenix College Bears 17, Pima Aztecs 16
The Aztecs were forced to play catch-up for much of the game but with three runs scored in the 6th inning, they tied it up at 16-16 when sophomore Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) reached on an error and freshman Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS) came in to score.
Miranda led off the inning with a home run and Marx reached on an error, which scored freshman Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS).
Miranda reached base with an RBI single in the 7th inning to put the tying run on, but the Aztecs recorded three straight outs to end the game.
The Aztecs scored seven runs in the 2nd inning. Freshman Nevaeah Bracamonte hit a two-run RBI double to score Marx and Zepeda. Chacon followed with a two-run homer to cut Phoenix’s lead to 11-8. Freshman Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) capped off the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to bring around Rivera as the Aztecs trailed 11-10.
Trailing 14-10 in the 4th inning, Chacon led off the inning with a single and Miranda followed with her first home run of the day to make it 14-12.
Miranda finished the game 3 for 3 with four RBIs, three runs and two home runs. Chacon went 3 for 5 with three RBIs, two runs and a home run. Zepeda was 3 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Bracamonte closed out the game 1 for 2 with three RBIs and two runs. Rivera was 2 for 4 with two runs.
Waddell took the loss as she pitched one and one-third innings, giving up eight runs (eight earned) on seven hits with two walks.

The Aztecs took the lead in the 5th inning, but the Bears scored four unanswered runs to close it out.
Down 4-1, Zepeda led off the 5th inning with a home run. Zylinski-Wrobel hit a single and was driven in by Tsosie-Hood’s RBI single to cut it to 4-3. Chacon reached on an error and Miranda followed with a two-run homer to put the Aztecs up at 5-4.
The Bears scored three in the 6th inning to take the lead back and added an insurance run in the 7th.
Zepeda put the Aztecs ahead in the 1st inning with an RBI double as she finished the game 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Miranda went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Tsosie-Hood finished 3 for 4 with an RBI and Chacon was 1 for 4 with a run.
Tsosie-Hood took the loss as she pitched a complete-game, giving up eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits with six strikeouts.
The Aztecs will play a doubleheader against Miles Community College at Lincoln Park (Field #7) on Monday as part of the TIG Tournament. First game starts at 3:30 p.m.
