The Senior’s 15-goal day accounts for three records broken for Sun Devil Water Polo
CLAREMONT, Calif. – Luca Petovary’s stellar senior season continues by achieving the most goals scored by a Sun Devil in a season, sitting at 93 goals after netting 15 in both Sun Devil Water Polo’s victories today against Mount St. Mary’s and Azusa Pacific.
Arizona State (16-4, 0-1 MPSF) got off to a fast start against Mount St. Mary’s, led by a record breaking performance by Luca Petovary, tallying 10 goals in the 24-5 win in the first game of the Friday doubleheader. Then, the Sun Devils handled Azusa Pacific behind seven different Sun Devil goal-scorers, coasting to a 15-8 win to wrap up the day.
The astounding performance by Petovary against the Mountaineers marks the most goals in a game by a Sun Devil with 10, breaking her previous record of nine set on Feb. 10 against Marist. With that, she also sets the new MPSF record with ten goals in a contest, becoming the first in conference history to net double-digit goals in a game.
The senior has six games in her career with 7+ goals in a game and 15 such games with 5+ goals in her career. She is currently chasing down the program’s season points record, career goals and points record with at least 12 games remaining.
Sophie Shorter-Robinson continued her goal-scoring streak with scoring in both games today, extending it to 13 games. With two goals in both games, she’s now had 10 multi-goal games this year. Her New Zealand counterpart had six goals on the day, four against the Mountaineers and two against the Cougars, making it the 12th multi-goal game of the season.
Freshman Kat Featherstone had back-to-back multi-goal games for her career, scoring two in both games. In the cage, Sanne Keijzer tallied nine saves against the Mountaineers, and then accounted for 12 saves against the Cougars, making it the fourth time she’s had 10+ saves in a game this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One: No. 11 Arizona State 24, Mount St. Marys
Gabby Gaetano gave the Sun Devil’s their first goal at the 6:30 mark in the opening quarter. Then following a Mountaineers goal, Petovary and Shorter-Robinson scored twice in a 20-second span to give ASU a 3-1 lead.
Before the end of the opening quarter, Petovary and Alba Olivé-Martí each added a goal to give the Sun Devils a 5-1 lead.
The Sun Devil offensive attack stayed agressive in the second quarter, taking advantage of the Mountaineer’s miscues and turning it into seven unanswered goals before the end of the first half. Petovary accounted for four goals in the 2nd quarter to tie the program’s goal-scoring record sitting at 84.
The Sun Devil’s offensive firepower continued in the third quarter, Kat Featherstone netted the Sun Devils’ first goal of the 2nd half, putting them ahead 13-2.
Following a Mountaineers goal, Luca Petovary broke the program record and netting her 7th goal on the powerplay with 3:16 left, her 85th goal of the year. Moments later she tallied her 8th and 9th goal in a 20-second span in the third quarter, giving ASU a 16-3 lead.
Millie Quin and Sophie Shorter-Robinson scored two goals before the end of the quarter with the Sun Devils ahead 18-3.
Opening the fourth quarter, Featherstone scored her second goal of the game, then after the Mountaineers scored off a penalty shot, Olivé-Martí scored on the powerplay, giving ASU a 20-4 lead.
Halfway through the 4th quarter, Petovary added her 10th goal of the game, breaking her own previous record of nine set against Marist on Feb. 10. Millie Quin netted a hat-trick and then her fourth goal of the game with 2:17 left. Lastly, Molly Ostrowski scored to secure the 24-5 victory for the Sun Devils.

Both teams started slow as freshman Alison Kokorowski added the Sun Devils only goal of the first quarter, as ASU was down one at the end of the quarter.
The Sun Devil offense awoke in the second quarter, six unanswered goals by ASU to storm out to a 7-2 lead before the Cougars scored late in the period. Luca Petovary accounted for four goals in the second quarter, along with Millie Quin, Sophie Shorter-Robinson and Emily Van Zonneveld scoring one-goal apiece to hold a 8-4 lead at halftime.
Both sides traded goals in the opening minutes of the third quarter that included Shorter-Robinson scoring her second of the game, then three minutes after Kokorowski scored ASU’s third power-play goal of the night to take a 10-5 lead at the 3:04 mark in the third.
ASU would score three more goals before the end of the third frame, assisted by Petovary, Quin and Kat Featherstone all adding to the Sun Devil lead entering the fourth quarter.
Featherstone scored her second goal of the game to open the final frame, then Olivé-Martí netted ASU’s 15th goal of the game to give the Sun Devils a 15-6 lead and ultimately the win.
