(Tempe, AZ) Having learned the opponents for their first season in the Big 12 in November, Sun Devil football was given the dates of those matchups on Tuesday when the Big 12 released its 2024 football schedule.
ASU will play six games at home in 2024, with four Big 12 contests and a pair of non-conference games. The first conference game will be a road game at Texas Tech, while Kansas will be the first conference opponent at home.
The nine-game conference slate the Sun Devils will face is the toughest of the 16 teams in the Big 12 based on 2023 overall winning percentages. The nine Sun Devil opponents posted a combined winning percentage of .578, with five winning at least eight games and seven playing in a bowl game.
In addition, the three non-conference opponents combined for a 22-16 overall record and two bowl appearances. The nine 2024 opponents that played in a bowl game finished with a combined 7-2 record in those contests.
The Sun Devils are 106-85-1 against the teams on the schedule, and they will play Kansas, Mississippi State, and Texas State for the first time. The majority of those previous games are against Arizona, BYU, and Utah. Removing those three matchups, ASU is 19-14 against the remaining opponents in the schedule.
ASU will begin the season with consecutive home games for the second successive season and the seventh time in the previous 10 years. In the program’s history, the team is 61-15-1 in season openers at home.
WYOMING/AUG. 31
The season will kickoff in Mountain America Stadium on August 31 when Wyoming visits Tempe for the first time since 1977. The Sun Devils are 9-6 all-time against the Cowboys, with the teams having played every season from 1965-1977, 1951, and 1963. Wyoming defeated Toledo in the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl to finish its 2023 season with a 9-4 record.
MISSISSIPPI STATE/SEPT. 7
SEC foe Mississippi State makes its way to the desert on September 7 for the first meeting between the two programs. It’s the first of a home-and-home with Bulldogs that will see the Sun Devils visit Starkville in 2025. Mississippi State concluded 2023 with a 5-7 record.
AT TEXAS STATE/SEPT. 14
ASU’s first road game of the season comes on September 14 against Texas State in San Marcos, Texas. It will make the second consecutive week the Sun Devil will play an opponent for the first time in program history. The Bobcats will return the game with a trip to Tempe in 2025. They went 8-5 last season and defeated Rice in the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl.
AT TEXAS TECH/SEPT. 21
Big 12 play will begin for the Sun Devils on September 21 at Texas Tech. The teams have split four previous meetings, including a 2017 meeting in Lubbock, Texas, the only previous meeting at the Red Raiders’ home. They defeated Cal in the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl to finish 7-6 in 2023.
KANSAS/OCT. 5
After an open week, ASU will play its first Big 12 home game on October 5 against Kansas. The Jayhawks are coming off a 9-4 season in which they won nine games for the first time since 2007 and only the seventh time in team history. The meeting will be the first between the two programs.
UTAH/OCT. 11
The following week sees a visit from a familiar foe in Utah, on Friday, October 11. The Utes went 8-5 this past season and played in the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl. While Utah has won four straight, ASU is 22-12 all-time in the series.
AT CINCINNATI/OCT. 19
ASU returns to the road the following week to play at Cincinnati on October 19. The previous two meetings in the series were wins by the Bearcats in Tempe during the 1954 and 1976 seasons. Cincinnati finished the 2023 season with a 3-9 record.
AT OKLAHOMA STATE/NOV. 2
A second open week precedes the Sun Devils traveling to Stillwater, Okla., for a November 2 game at Oklahoma State. The game will mark the third straight season the teams will play after a pair of non-conference outings in 2022 and 2023. OSU is 3-2 in the series, and they have split two matchups in Stillwater. The Cowboys went 10-4 last season, played in the Dr. Pepper Big 12 Championship Game and defeated Texas A&M in the TaxAct Texas Bowl.
UCF/NOV. 9
UCF will make its way to Mountain America Stadium on November 9. The Knights last visit – the only previous meeting in the series – was a 46-13 win by the Sun Devils during the 2002 season. UCF completed its first season in the Big 12 with a 6-7 record and with an appearance in the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl.
AT KANSAS STATE/NOV. 16
The Sun Devils visit Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan., on November 16. The seventh meeting in the series led by ASU 5-1 – and the first since the 2002 Holiday Bowl – is the first at the Wildcats home. K-State capped a 9-4 season in 2023 by defeating NC State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl.
BYU/NOV. 23
A former conference rivalry renews on November 23 when the Sun Devils host BYU. ASU leads the series with the Cougars 20-8, but they have only played once since 1998, and last met in Tempe in 1997. BYU completed its inaugural season in the Big 12 at 5-7 overall and 2-7 in the conference.
