(Gilbert, AZ) For the second time in three weeks, Park University Gilbert women’s basketball player Kayla Schroeder has been named the California Pacific Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Schroeder was honored for her performance this past week (Dec. 11-17) against Goshen and Benedictine Mesa.
Schroeder had a record breaking week, becoming the Buccaneers all-time leading scorer against Goshen. Schroeder only needed three points coming into the game to take over the top spot but she decided to put a zero on the end of that three to post a career high 30 points in a 70-56 win against a team coming in on an eight-game winning streak. She made 12-15 shots (75 percent) and 6-7 from beyond the arc (86 percent). She also added two assists and two steals.
She followed up with another 20+ point performance against Benedictine Mesa on Saturday. She had 24 points, going 8-12 from the floor (67 percent) and a perfect 4-4 from three-point range. She was also 4-5 from the line. She added six rebounds, four assists and a steal for the game.
For the season, the Neenah, Wisc., native is averaging 20.7 points per game, shooting 53.3 percent from the floor which are both tops in the conference. Her scoring average is 17th in the nation. She is second in the conference in three-point FG percentage (52.6 percent) only to fellow teammate Jenny Todd. She has made 30 three-point field goals this season which is also leading the conference. She is fourth in the nation in three-point FG made per game (3.3). Schroeder has four games of 24 or more points this season.
This is the third Cal Pac Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honor for the Buccaneers this season. Jayla Reliford won the award in week one.
Schroeder and the Buccaneers take on Olivet Nazarene tomorrow evening at the ACU Events Center on the campus of Arizona Christian at 7 p.m. Arizona time.
