Tanner Poeschl scores 21 points off the bench as Men’s Basketball drops 150 points in ACCAC opener

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (5-0, 1-0 in ACCAC) showcased its pressure defense on Tuesday in its ACCAC conference opening game at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The Aztecs defeated Phoenix College 150-82 as Pima forced 20 turnovers and picked up 14 steals in the first half. The Aztecs took advantage of the Bears’ miscues to take an 85-42 lead at halftime.

The Aztecs outscored the Bears 65-40 in the second half and finished the game with 20 steals as the Bears (0-6, 0-1) turned the ball over 29 times. The Aztecs won the battle under the basket after out-rebounding Phoenix College 61-31.

Pima went 58 for 97 (.598) from the field and drained 12 3-pointers.

They had eight players score in double figures. Sophomore Tanner Poeschl (Skyline HS) scored a game-high 21 points off the bench as he went 8 for 10 from the field.

Sophomore Dillan Baker (Salpointe Catholic HS) closed out the game with 18 points and four assists while freshman Gabe Oldham posted a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Toate Sika (Rincon HS) went 4 for 5 from the field and finished with 13 points off the bench.

Freshman Moses Demalek added 12 points on 5 for 8 shooting and freshman Cohenj Gonzales (Mesquite HS) scored 11 points and had three steals.

Sophomore Zach Williamson and freshman Wes Ball (Marana HS) each scored 10 points. Williamson was 5 for 7 from the field and also had seven assists and four steals.

The Aztecs return to the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium next Tuesday, Nov. 28 when they host Glendale Community College in ACCAC conference action. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
