(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (3-0) picked up another win against an NJCAA Division I opponent on Friday in the second day of the Gila Monster Shootout in Thatcher.
The No. 9 ranked Aztecs (Division II) defeated Howard College (TX) 69-49 and put the game away after outscoring them 25-14 in the second half. The Aztecs held a 27-19 lead at halftime.
Freshman Rylei Waugh finished with a game-high 16 points as she went 5 for 13 from the field and 6 for 6 from the free throw line. She also had three rebounds and four assists.
Freshman Gabriella Sanchez (Tucson Magnet HS) also scored in double figures as she closed out the game with 11 points on 5 for 8 shooting. She also added six rebounds.
The Pima bench scored 33 points for the game as sophomore Dominique Acosta (Nogales HS) fell short of a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds. Fellow sophomore Taina Lee finished with nine points. Freshman Rori Hoffmeyer (Cibola HS) had four points and nine rebounds.
The Aztecs will close out play in the Gila Monster Shootout on Saturday when they go up against Salt Lake Community College at 1:00 p.m.
