Aztecs Women’s Soccer falls to Phoenix College in Region I Finals
(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s soccer team played in its fourth straight NJCAA Region I, Division II Finals match on Saturday.
The No. 3 seeded Aztecs fell to No. 1 Phoenix College 3-1. This was the second straight year Pima has lost at Phoenix College in the finals.
The Aztecs struggled to generate offense in the first half as the Bears got on the board in the 11th minute with a goal from Justyce Smith. They took advantage of a foul inside the box and Chloe Corral scored on a penalty kick in the 41st minute. The Aztecs trailed 2-0 at halftime.
The Aztecs made it interesting and cut it to a one-goal deficit when sophomore Kyleigh Oliver (Salpointe Catholic HS) converted on her shot in the 49th minute to make it 2-1.
The Bears responded five minutes later when Ariany Mapula scored in the 54th minute.
The Aztecs were held to one shot on goal in the first half and finished with three for the game. The Aztecs had an opportunity when Oliver fed a pass to freshman Lizzie Walker inside the box, but her attempt was halted by Phoenix goalkeeper Morgan Trail to preserve their lead.
Sophomore Adriana Pacheco finished the game with seven saves; she made six in the first half as the Aztecs held the Bears to two shots on goal in the second half.
The Aztecs are now 8-7-2 overall and await to see if they receive an at-large bid for the NJCAA Division II National Tournament held from Nov. 12-18 at Kino North Sports Complex.
