(Mesa, AZ) The Park University Gilbert women’s soccer team got a measure of revenge against Pacific Union College with a 2-0 win this evening at Legacy Sports Park. This avenges a 1-0 loss to the Pioneers last year. The Buccaneers even their overall record at 4-4-2 and get their third win in conference putting them one win their win total in conference from last year.
Park Gilbert got on the board six and a half minutes into the game as Dani Mares scored her third goal of the season on a rebound off of a Michelle Munoz shot which ricocheted off the crossbar.
Goal number two came via a penalty kick earned by forward pressure which resulted in a penalty in the box. Alli Meisel buried the opportunity in the back of the net to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead.
The Bucs outshot the Pioneers 6-3 in the first half with the Bucs getting four shots on goal and the Pioneers had two shots over the crossbar, but those do not count as on goal. Park also led the first half in corner kicks 5-1.
The second half turned into a defensive struggle as PUC attempted to apply pressure to come back and the Bucs continued to try to add to their advantage.
The two teams combined for only five total shots in the second half. All five of them were on goal but none were able to make its way past the goal line.
Park finished with nine shots (7 on goal) to five (2 on goal) for PUC.
Catherine Corlett picks up her second clean sheet of the season, picking up the other in a 2-0 win against Oregon Tech to start the season. Corlette now has seven shutouts in her Park career.
The women return to action next week as they travel to northern California to take on UC Merced next Friday, September 29 who’s only loss is to No. 14 Embry Riddle. The Bucs match next Sunday with Cal Maritime has been cancelled due to CSUM not having enough players to field a team. The Bucs will get a forfeit win overall, but none of the wins against them will count towards conference standings.
