(Portland, OR) The Park University Gilbert women’s soccer team fell in its opening contest in Oregon 2-1 to Warner Pacific University in Portland, Ore., this afternoon. The Buccaneers fall to 1-2 on the season while Warner Pacific wins its season opener and moves to 1-0.
The Buccaneers got off to a fast start getting the first five shots off in the game. They only managed to get one of them on goal, however. WPU answered back with three shots of its own, all three were on goal and they scored on one of them by Shalece Easley 30 minutes into the first half.
Just over 10 and a half minutes later the Knights made it 2-0 with a goal from Maddie Gross. The home team had now scored two goals on just four shots. This would be the last shot on goal for the Knights in the game. This game was reminiscent of what Park Gilbert did in its season opener against Oregon Tech where they won 2-0 with only three shots on goal.
The Bucs finally answered with a goal in the 69th minute as Emma Alvarez scored her second goal of the season with the assist coming from Hallie Benson.
Park had a couple of opportunities to tie the game over the last 20 minutes as they peppered two more shots on WPU goalkeeper Lizzy Gonzales who made the stops to keep the Bucs at bay.
Overall, Park Gilbert outshot WPU 10-4 with six shots on goal. All four of the Knights shots were on goal. Alvarez led the Bucs with three shots, two of them on goal and the only tally on the board for the day.
The Bucs will now try to get back on the winning side of the ledger as they travel to Newberg, Ore., to take on NCAA Division III George Fox University on Saturday, August 26 at 2 p.m.
