(Chula Vista, CA) The Park University Gilbert beach volleyball team split a pair of matches on day one of the California Pacific Conference Beach Volleyball Championships at the Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.. The Buccaneers defeated Benedictine Mesa 4-1 in the first match, before dropping the second match to No. 1 Corban 5-0.
The championships feature teams from both the Cal Pac and Cascade Conferences as the two leagues combine in the postseason for an automatic bid.
The Buccaneers upped their record to 3-0 against the Redhawks this season having beaten them twice in the two Cal Pac Jamborees at Park Gilbert and Westcliff earlier in the season. The Bucs won three-set matches at the No. 1 and 2 flights and lost their only match at the No. 4 flight.
The Bucs lost all five matches in straight sets against Corban, the No. 1 team in the country and the defending national champions.
With the 1-1 record, Park Gilbert is the No. 4 seed heading into the single elimination qualifying tournament for the NAIA Championships tomorrow. The Buccaneers will need to win the tournament to make the national tournament.
The Buccaneers will face No. 5 seed Bushnell at 9 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, April 7. Bushnell lost both matches in pool play to No. 7 Saint Katherine and No. 2 Westcliff. The winner of this match will face off with No. 1 Corban at 3 p.m. Bushnell is 0-4 against Corban this season.
