(Berkeley, CA) For the second straight day, the bats failed to deliver as Arizona State lost to California 2-0 on Saturday in the second game of the three-game weekend series. The Sun Devils (17-10, 1-4 Pac-12) tallied just five singles in the loss.
ASU’s pitching staff worked out of several Cal (22-7-1, 4-3-1) scoring situations to keep the Sun Devils within striking distance, but the offense was 2-for-12 with runners on base and had just one single in five at-bats with runners in scoring position.
HOW IT HAPPENED
ASU loaded the bases in the second behind a pair of singles from Jazmine Hill and Kayla Lissy and a walk to Savannah Price but failed to score.
Cal loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second when Kylee Mageerecorded a pair of strikeouts and forced a groundout to get out of the jam.
The Golden Bears scored their two runs in the third on a bloop single and an error.
In the fifth, the Sun Devils got runners to second and third with two outs but again came up empty.
With Cal threatening again in the sixth, Gianna Boccagno picked off a runner at third.
NOTABLE
ASU stole two bases in the game for the sixth game this season with multiple steals and third in the past four contests.
The Sun Devils are now 2-for-24 with runners on base and 1-for-9 when in scoring position in the series.
For the second time this season – and first in a seven-inning game – ASU pitchers didn’t walk any batters.
Alexa Milius had a pair of hits for her eighth multi-hit game of the season.
Hill had her first stolen base since May 21, 2022, against San Diego State.
Magee finished with three strikeouts in two innings.
Kenzie Brown allowed just one hit with four strikeouts in her three innings.
