(Tucson, AZ) The University of Jamestown and Park University-Gilbert squared off at Lincoln Regional Park as part of the Tucson Invitational Games. The late morning game was the second match for both teams.
Park University, rolling on a fourteen game win streak which included a 10-3 win in the morning game over a (2-7) Siena Heights team who gave the Bucs little problem.
The second game began with two “taylor made” ground balls that should have been double plays were either booted or off the gloves of the right side of the Bucs infield.
The Bucs catcher threw out the runner trying to steal second with two outs to end the inning with no damage done.
In the top of the second inning, the lead off batter Lefebvre hit solid line drive to to left field that the Bucs left fielder Romero dove but missed and that allowed the hitter to take the extra base.
Jamestown continued to put runners in scoring position by moving them up on a sacrifice bunt. A batter later drew a walk to load the bases.
The Bucs forced in a run on a walk as pinch runner Aasen made it 1-0. By the time the inning was over, another run had scored for a 2-0 lead for the Jimmies on an RBI single by centerfielder Gregg.
Park made a little noise in the bottom of the third inning when shortstop Olivas stroked a two out single to center and then stole second base putting their first runner in scoring position. The next batter left fielder Romero however struck out looking to end the threat.
Both pitchers had to work themselves out of jams throughout the contest.
A nice defensive play in the top of the fourth from the Bucs centerfielder Robles who cut off a line drive to the right centerfield alley before it got to the fence fired a relay that nailed the runner who midway around third base on her way home.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Jimmies got the lead off batter Gregg on with a single to left field. After Spaeth popped up to the catcher, the next batter Martinez hit a single thought the right side of the Park infield to put two runners on.
The Bucs helped themselves with a strike out looking for the second out, and the next batter Lefebvre grounded out ending the inning,
No scoring from either school in the fifth and the sixth inning, both schools went out in order.
Park came up for their last hacks in the bottom of the seventh inning down one.
With their backs against the wall, they put the pressure on the Jimmies pitcher with a walk to Nerey and singles by Romero and Farinas.
Nerey scored on an error to cut the lead in half. The next batter Myers was intentionally walked and Bucs had loaded the bases with one out.
Park showed some grit and didn’t lay down, but on a groundout the tying run was thrown out at home on a force play. Down to their last out, they hit a weak grounder to the first baseman to end the game 2-1.
