(Tempe, AZ) In their first home match of 2023, No. 8 Sun Devil Wrestling (2-3) fell 24-12 to No. 17 Princeton (1-5) on Sunday afternoon. ASU picked up wins at 133, 141 and 149 from Michael McGee, Jesse Vasquez and Kyle Parco. The Sun Devils’ next matchup will be at home again. They’ll host Cal Poly on Friday at 7:00 p.m. MST (ASU Live Stream) in the Beauty and the Beast event which will showcase a simultaneous wrestling/gymnastics meet featuring Sun Devil Gymnastics taking on Stanford.
Of Note
Michael McGee picked up his 11th win of the season in a 19-3 tech fall victory over Sean Pierson. He now has won back-to-back matches and has 24 tech fall victories in his career.
In the next match, Jesse Vasquez took down Danny Coles in a 10-2 major decision win. He took a 7-2 lead going into the second period after a takedown and held on in the final period to get the victory.
Against Marshall Keller, Kyle Parco took a 2-1 lead going into the second period and picked up an 11-5 win.
In an extra match at 125, Richard Figueroa defeated Nick Kayal 9-5 following the dual. Figureoa remains undefeated at 12-0 on the year.
“The initial reaction is that we didn’t get our hand raised and win the dual so it hurts,” head coach Zeke Jones said. “We have to get out there and fight and battle and we just didn’t in some weight classes. We obviously have some injuries but it doesn’t matter, next man has to step up and get the job done. I think it’s effort – the goal has to be to get better every day so we gotta improve and that’s what we’re going to work on.”
