(Angwin, CA) The Park University Gilbert volleyball team (11-6, 4-2) got its three-game road trip off to a solid start with a quick three-set victory over Pacific Union (2-7, 1-5) by scores of 25-8, 25-14 and 25-12. The Buccaneers were never really challenged in the match and dominated in every aspect. Park Gilbert now owns a 5-0 mark against Pacific Union in the overall series.
The first set saw the Buccaneers hold the Pioneers to under 10 points. The first time they had accomplished this feat this season. The Buccaneers pounded 18 kills to just five for PUC and also had four service aces. They hit an ungodly .556 for the set.
The second set was a little tighter early in the set with PUC holding an early 6-2 lead. But an 8-0 run removed the deficit and put the Bucs up by four. The Bucs continued its onslaught with 10 more kills and six aces.
The third set was much of the same as another 12 kills and four aces paced the visitors from Gilbert as they polished off the Pioneers in just over an hour. It took the team 90 minutes to sojourn through northern California wine country from its hotel in Sacramento to Angwin, Calif., and they completed the match in 25 fewer minutes.
As a team, the Buccaneers had 40 kills to only 14 for the Pioneers. But most importantly, the Bucs had a season low nine attack errors and tied the school record with a .431 attack percentage. Park Gilbert added 14 service aces and also tied a season low with four service errors.
Individually, Amanda Jonovich almost had as many kills as the entire Pacific Union team as she posted 13 putaways with only one error to hit a career high .750; the fifth highest hitting percentage in school history. Miranda Bacon added seven kills and Railey Druxman six kills and nine digs to the cause.
Hattie Patton led all players with 11 digs, while Jenifer Lauer had 13 assists and Melissa Blockey had 12 assists and two aces.
Up next, the Buccaneers will saunter down to UC Merced to take on the Bobcats tomorrow afternoon starting at 5 p.m.
