(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College softball team (4-3, 2-0 in ACCAC) opened ACCAC conference play on Tuesday at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field.
The Aztecs earned a sweep over Chandler-Gilbert Community College (2-6, 1-5). Sophomore Mackenzie Judge (Ironwood Ridge HS) went 4 for 7 with five RBIs and two runs scored for the day. Freshman Bianca Castillo (Rio Rico HS) picked up two wins on the mound.
Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 9, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 3: The Aztecs put up five runs in the 2nd inning and three runs in the 4th.
Freshman Devynn Marshall (Shadow Ridge HS) hit a two-run RBI single to tie the game at 3-3 in the 2nd inning. Sophomore Mya Cabral (Pueblo HS) followed with a two-run RBI double. Fellow sophomore Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) drove in Cabral to put the Aztecs up 6-3.
Cabral added an RBI single in the 1st and an RBI double in the 4th as she finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Caldera had a two-run RBI single in the 4th and was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Marshall went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Judge and sophomore Alese Casper each went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
Castillo (2-0) settled in after giving up three runs in the 2nd inning. She threw a complete game giving up three runs (three earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 7, Chandler-Gilbert CC 6: Down 6-3 in the 6th inning, the Aztecs rallied off four runs to take the lead.
Judge cleared the bases with a three-run RBI double with no outs to give the Aztecs the lead for good.
Castillo gave up a lead-off walk in the 7th, got the next batter to flyout and got a ground ball double-play to end the game.
Judge had a two-run RBI double in the 2nd inning to give Pima a 3-1 lead. She finished 2 for 3 with five RBIs. Casper reach on errors twice and finished 1 for 3 with three runs scored. Caldera hit an RBI single in the 1st inning as she went 2 for 4 in the game.
Castillo (3-0) earned the win in relief as she pitched the final two and one-third innings giving up two hits.
The Aztecs will hit the road on Saturday when they play at Central Arizona College in ACCAC Division I action. The first game of the doubleheader will start at noon.
