Sun Devils return home with hopes of NCAA Regional bi

(Oklahoma City, OK)  Sun Devil Softball saw its time at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship come to an end with a loss to No. 11/11 Texas Tech in Friday’s semifinal action. ASU, which jumped five spots in the RPI this week, reached the semifinals in its first season in the conference.

With this week’s time in OKC complete, the Sun Devils will look forward, where they hope to receive an at-large invite to the NCAA Softball Championship. The 64-team field and the Regional assignments will be announced on Sunday at 4 p.m. AZT on ESPN2.

Despite entering the game with momentum following their upset of No. 23/23 Oklahoma State on Thursday, the Sun Devils struggled to find offensive rhythm against Texas Tech’s NiJaree Canady. The Big 12 Pitcher of the Year limited the Sun Devils to just one hit while striking out five before exiting after three innings.

ASU’s best scoring opportunity came in the fourth inning when AJ Murphy singled through the left side and Kelsey Hall reached on an error. Yannixa Acuña followed with a single, but Texas Tech responded by stranding the bases loaded.

Meika Lauppe took the loss, allowing three runs in two innings of work. Cambree Creager and Julianne Tipton followed in relief, but were unable to limit the Red Raiders’ offense.

Samantha Swan also singled in the game for the Sun Devils. ASU ended the game with six runners left on base.
