Aztecs Softball season comes to a close at the NJCAA Division II World Series

(Oxford, AL)  The Pima Community College softball team played another two games on Thursday as part of the NJCAA Division II World Series.

The No. 7 seeded Aztecs won their first game of the day in dramatic fashion but saw their season come to an end in their evening contest as they finished in the top six in the tournament.

Consolation Game (10:00 a.m.) – (7) Pima Aztecs 6, (9) Northwest Mississippi Rangers 5

W – Thompson (14-0). 2B: Nunez, Rivera, Martin. 3B: Martin.

The Aztecs put together their third straight rally victory as they scored five runs in the 6th inning to shock the Rangers.

Down 5-1 in the bottom of the 6th inning, freshman Jiselle Nunez (Tucson Magnet HS) led off with a double deep to center field. Pinch runner Taiya Teixeira (Salpointe Catholic HS) advanced on the basepaths on two passed balls to score. After sophomore Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo HS) drew a walk, sophomore Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS) hit her own shot deep to center field, which scored pinch runner Nevaeh Bracamonte to cut the deficit to 5-3.
The Aztecs recorded two straight outs. Freshman Belen Camacho (Pueblo HS) came on to pinch hit and came through hitting a bullet up the middle to drive in Rivera. Freshman Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS) hit a single to put two runners on base.
Sophomore Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) put the Aztecs ahead for the first time with a hit to center field to score Camacho and Figueroa.

Sophomore Jessica Thompson (Tanque Verde HS) closed it out as she got a flyout to center field to end the game. The Rangers left two runners on base to end the game.

The Aztecs got on the board in the 3rd inning when Martin scored on an error.
Martin finished the game 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Rivera went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run. Camacho was 1 for 1 with an RBI and a run. Figueroa finished 1 for 3 with a run.

Thompson picked up her 14th win of the season as she appeared in relief going five innings, giving up two runs (two earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks on 99 pitches.

L – Flores (22-5). 2B: Nunez. SB: Martin.

The Aztecs took an early advantage but the Vikings chipped away in the late innings and won it off a walk-off in the 7thinning.

The Aztecs took the lead back in the top of the 7th inning as freshman Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside HS) found a gap in left field to score freshman Julissa Lopez (Tucson Magnet HS) as Pima went back up at 7-6. Freshman Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS) followed with a sacrifice-fly RBI and it brought in freshman Taiya Teixeira (Salpointe Catholic HS) to make it 8-6.

The Vikings had two runners on base with one out in the 7th. Olivia Hansen hit a line drive RBI single and Princess Arredondo hit a walk-off RBI single that scored two runs to end the game.

The Aztecs’ offense started out on fire. Marx and Noriega each hit RBI singles in the 1st inning to give Pima a 2-0 lead.

The Aztecs scored again in the 2nd inning. After the first two outs, Marx, Nunez and Noriega loaded the bases with three straight singles. Rivera hit a sharp single to left field to bring in Marx as the Aztecs went up 3-0.

Marx wasn’t finished as she went the opposite way with an RBI single in the 3rd inning, scoring pinch runner Nevaeh Bracamonte. It was followed by freshman Nunez’s two-run RBI double that was just out of reach of the right fielder as Bracamonte and Marx came in to score to put the Aztecs up 6-0.

The Pima offense was held without a hit for 10 straight at-bats between the 4th and the first batter of the 7th inning.

Marx finished the game 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Nunez went 2 for 4 with two RBIs while Noriega, Rivera and Lopez-Bedoy each finished 2 for 4 with an RBI. Figueroa was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run and Lopez went 1 for 3 with a run.

Freshman Arianna Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) took the loss in a relief appearance as she pitched one and one-third innings, giving up two runs (earned) on two hits with one strikeout. Camacho pitched five innings, giving up four runs (four earned) on nine hits with six strikeouts and four walks.

The Aztecs closed out the 2025 season with a 53-9 overall record. It is the most wins in a season since 2012 when they went 56-15. The last time the softball program had single digit losses to close the season was in 2010 when they finished 55-9. The Aztecs secured a 35-7 ACCAC conference record and it was the most wins since they went 37-11 in 2015.
