(Glendale, AZ) The Pima Community College baseball team (43-11, 27-11 in ACCAC) rallied from an early deficit and took control on Tuesday in its ACCAC conference game at Glendale Community College (19-33, 9-27).
The No. 9 ranked Aztecs defeated the Gauchos 15-6 in seven innings as they picked up their 13th win om their last 15 games.
W – Gray (7-1). 2B: Leyva, MacDonald. SB: Richards, Cereceres, MacDonald.
The Gauchos got their offense going with four runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, but the Aztecs responded to tie the game in the top of the 2nd inning.
Sophomore Collin Senior and freshman Zach Plasschaert hit two straight singles to get on base to start the inning. Freshman Matt MacDonald hit an RBI double to score Senior as Plasschaert scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit in half. Sophomore Andrew Grenert (Horizon HS) reached on an error, which brought in MacDonald. Grenert also scored on an error to tie it at 4-4.
The Aztecs took the lead for good in the 4th inning when sophomore Caden Richards hit a two-run RBI single to left field bringing around Grenert and sophomore Ray Jesse. Grenert singled and Jesse was hit by a pitch to open the inning.
The Aztecs brought out the sticks again with six runs in the 6th inning. Richards, sophomore Nolan Ganter (Pinnacle HS) and freshman Jackson Glueck hit three straight RBI singles to put Pima up 9-4. Plasschaert hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to left field to score Ganter. MacDonald followed with his third RBI hit of the game to plate Glueck, and later scored on an error to cap the inning. The Aztecs led 12-4 heading to the 7th inning.
Freshman Max Leyva (Tucson Magnet HS) added more insurance in the 7th inning as he hit a two-run RBI double to left field driving in Richards and Glueck. Leyva scored on Grenert’s RBI single as the Aztecs brought in another three runs.
Richards finished the game going 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs while MacDonald went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs. Glueck and Grenert each were 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs and Leyva closed it out at 1 for 1 with two RBIs and a run. Freshman Leon Cereceres went 3 for 5 with a run while Ganter and Plasschaert each had an RBI and a run.
Sophomore Nate Gray (Queen Creek HS) picked up the win after he pitched five and two-third innings, giving up five runs (two earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk on 108 pitches.
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Field on Friday when they host No. 3 ranked South Mountain Community College in their final regular season home game of the season. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
